Another update - if you're into social media, NHS Grampian Archives also have Facebook and Twitter pages. The Facebook one is www.facebook.com/NHSGrampianArchives and Twitter is www.twitter.com/NHSGArchives (or just look for @NHSGArchives if you're already on Twitter)

That is good to know,but why can't they put that explanation on the web site. I've been waiting patiently for a long time (seems more than a year) for word that the records are available again. The records are in the process of being moved from their current storage to the University of Aberdeen's Special Collections. Doesn't look like the milestone has survived redevelopment - there are ones for 3 and 4 miles further out which are still there. However, it's possible that it's since been put back since that new retail bit was built, as it looked quite new on Google streetview.

Ha, thanks for all the answers! So it would seem that, like after statutory registration, people just got married wherever, either at home, in the manse (hadn't crossed my mind about unheated churches...) or someone else's home. It was really just curiosity, because the OPRs don't really mention any...

This may sound like a really stupid question, but where would people have actually got married in the early 1800s? Would it have been at the parish church, or would it have been at home? It's something I've never really thought about before - I know people didn't tend to marry in churches later on, ...
