Re: Isle of Rum Russell Family

Hi Rex, Rum (also Rhum or Rùm) is one of the Small Isles. I have visited Canna that looks over to Rum, so have seen Rum from there and from the ferry that serves the Small Isles. It is a hilly / mountainous island. I don't know if any of the small population stay anywhere other than Kinloch these da...

Re: Unmarried mother home or Convent in Bishopton

You are one large step forward having names. As they could be living, please don't put their names up here on the forum. If their names are uncommon, you have a fair chance with https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . You can look for a death certificate of each person with a range of ages you expect t...

Re: Admission to Blind School.

Hi Douglas,

Is it definitely not "Inspector of Poor"? That was a post in every parish / county to deal with applications for funds or placements in the poorhouse or the like.

All the best,

Re: McPhersons of Kilmonivaig, Inverness-shire.

The Detailed List of OPRs from 1872 gives the following details for Kilmonivaig: >> B: 1730-1819; 1820-1854 >> M: 1795-1819; 1820-1854 >> D: none Note: all OPRs are split at 1819/1820 as these were sent in from the local registrars to New Register House at separate times (1855 and 1885), as required...

Re: Unmarried mother home or Convent in Bishopton

That is a tricky one, sending away these documents, especially when your postal service is not functioning. Your suggestion of a UK embassy in South Africa for verification of your documents is worth pursuing with NRS. Failing that, it could be worth asking them if they have any 'trust relationship'...

Re: 1855 A Scottish Statutory Story

My grandmother was registered twice. She was born in HER grandmother's house and registered in that district. Then registered again in the district where her parents lived. Was your grandmother the first-born by her mother? I have found in my research that in the times when births were normally at ...

Re: 1855 A Scottish Statutory Story

I have 15 'double registrations' in my almost 1000 birth records in my family tree. These were from 1868 to 1933. Normally with these, the wording in the last column is different. In the column where the registrar (or assistant registrar) signs the certificate, it says that it is transcribed from th...

Re: Broadgreens, Banchory Devenick - what happened?

I have the words of the song in the back of my head "... they paved paradise, and put up a parking lot..." https://thegreatestsongs.com/468-big-yellow-taxi-joni-mitchell/ I never gave a thought to the meaning of that song from my childhood years. Now I hear it [and read it] I see the meaning. Thank...

Re: Broadgreens, Banchory Devenick - what happened?

On looking at Google Maps StreetView, at Broadgreens it only shows a 2023 set of images. If you go to the foot of the access road and move out onto the road, you get a few choices of dates to look at. One from about 15 years back shows a sign with a name for Broadgreens. The later views there do not...
