Former Edinburgh business

I hope I’m not going crazy. Can anybody please tell me if there used to be a gym or leisure club just off Rose Street in Edinburgh? I am pretty certain it was on Rose Street Lane North (sometimes known as Rose Street North Lane). This would possibly have been between the mid 1980s to the late 1990s....

Re: William Telford White, marine stoker (Royal Navy)

Hi Stewart, Please accept my apologies for not getting back to you sooner. My family history has taken a bit of a back seat of late, especially with so many records offices etc. being closed because of Covid-19. My memory is a bit vague just now. I am sure that my inquiry about William is on behalf ...

Re: Bankruptcies

Thanks to you both, currie and AndrewP. Yes, I have seen the cutting from the newspaper. I also have Alexander's death certificate. That is why I am puzzled by the reference to his death being connected to Ardkinglas House. This reference appears in a book that I was casually browsing through not so...

Bankruptcies

Hello, I want to find out how bankruptcies are recorded in Scotland and where details can be viewed. The possible period concerned could be from 1905ish to 1925. My great grandfather ran his own plumbing and gas fitting business in Ardrishaig Argyll. It was established in 1901. One of his prestigiou...

Re: Miss Bester photographed outside a house called 'Janeville'

Have come back to this thread after a chat with a friend. It is just possible that there is a Campbell connection to 'Janeville'. My friend says one of his aunts inherited the house - or possibly just one of the floors - from a maternal aunt of hers. My friends aunt's maiden name was Muller (or vari...

Re: Birth place of Alexander Stewart (born. c. 1804)

Hi again Lotsofbranches, Please excuse the very lateness of my reply to your latest email - lots of family issues on the go! Thanks for the updated information, v. helpful. Like you, now that I have been able to confirm for certain Alexander's birth details and relevant family I still have the head-...

Re: Birth place of Alexander Stewart (born. c. 1804)

Hi again Lotsofbranches, Can I just check something with you. It says in your original post that Alexander Steurt married Margaret McLeay on 18 July 1789. It then states that children Hellen and George were baptised in 1781 and 1783 respectively. Is the marriage date just a typo, perhaps meant to be...

Re: Birth place of Alexander Stewart (born. c. 1804)

Hi Again Lotsofbranches, Dug out my baptismal record for Alexander (not a birth certifcate, of course - a mistake in my previous post). It does indeed say "Donald Stewart, Sandend" as a witness. Just to fill in the picture, Alexander married Elspet Grant on the 6th of November1830. They had the foll...

Re: Birth place of Alexander Stewart (born. c. 1804)

Hi Lotsofbranches, Thanks v. much for your feedback. I have not abandoned my family research. It's just that I am now down to tying up loose ends in certain areras. I think you have found just what I am looking for. The fact that it is Margaret Margaret McLeay/McLea/McLean instead of Ann does not ca...
