Re: James Ogilvie and naming pattern

My mistake I should have written as you have corrected. William was his first son's name - it was also the name of his wife's father but if they followed
the usual naming pattern it could have been his father's name too.

thanks for drawing my attention to the mistake.

James Ogilvie and naming pattern

I am at a deadened trying to find the parents of my James Ogilvie and wonder how strongly we can rely on naming patterns. All of the names of the parents and children are frequently used through the generations. Following the pattern of first born son - maternal grandfather - second born daughter - ...

Couple marrying in 2 villages

Does anyone know reasons why a couple would marry one week in Arbroath and the next week in St Vigeans in 1854? I thought those places were only 2k apart. Could it mean the two families couldn't stand or entertain each other or would it be something to do with convenience for the guests? He was a wi...

Surname variations for Sturrock advice

Is Stroak an accepted variation for Sturrock? My ancestors seemed to be Stroaks in the 1600 - 1750s then became
Sturrocks. They were from the Angus area if that helps. As an Ogilvie I am well used to Ogilvie/Ogilvy but wonder
whether Stroak = Sturrock. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Help finding maiden voyage of ship Elizabeth please

Thank you so much for taking the time for helping us track down the Elizabeth and her maiden voyage. Loved the newspaper
reports. Hope our ancestor was crewing on it. Thanks again. =D>

Help finding maiden voyage of ship Elizabeth please

Could anyone help me find out when the Arbroath ship Elizabeth made her maiden voyage to Australia. Some historical sites state she was built by W Stephens yard in Arbroath in 1852, Lloyds have her registered in 1853. She was about 484 tons. Her voyage was to Melbourne from Dundee. We're also lookin...

Ebenezer Annan from Kinross to Canada 1841-1848

I am looking for a passenger listing for Ebenezer Annan born in Kinross 1821 - died in 1847 - he was in the 1841 Scotland Census - so we have a narrow time frame. I understand he is in A dictionary of Scottish emigrants to Canada before Confederation / by Donald Whyte. Volume 1, 1986. 443p. but this...

Thanks everyone - how lovely does that area look? Don't know if it is my James Ogilvie but
if so, he sure lived in a lovely place (bet it was a bit tough back in the day though).
thanks again everyone

What does "Cotton of...." refer to?

I have an OPR from Kirkden 1767 which contains references to the father's name then "in Cotton of ....." Mine reads "James Ogilvie in Cotton of Midleton had a child baptized upon the ....day of January 1767 named James" All but one of the fathers have a 'Cotton of...." reference to them. None of the...
