Hi Ann
Unfortunately my McWhae is one of my dead ends. However the name seems to be most common in Dumfriesshire, Kircudbrightshire and thereabouts (where mine are from). It's an odd name with many variants including McQua, so it might be worth trying some of those.

Re: Family History Goals for 2018
That's a good one. 1. Tidy up my tree, particularly standardise place names. I'm keen to play around with mapping software more seriously (have dabbleed with Google maps & QGIS) 2. Set aside some real time to get back into the archives. I've got a list of 4 to visit (Mitchell Library, Paisley, E Dun...

Re: TS Seminar in Kilbarchan Saturday 11th October.
Hi Russell, I'm afraid I'd neglected this forum for a while, but the meeting in Kilbarchan sounds interesting. It's on my list of places to visit, so all else being equal, I'd love to come along, if there's space.

Re: Queensland historical certificates
Just want to chime in here, I downloaded a couple of death certificates this week, of my g-g-g-grandparents (both from the late 1870s). Hassle-free and, although more expensive than SP, but worth it in terms of the information provided. I couldn't find an example on the site so was pleasantly surpri...

U.S. Military Service Records
Does anyone have any experience of ordering records from the U.S National Archives? What I think I'm interested in would be a Federal Military Pension Application - Civil War and Later Complete File (NATF 85D) https://eservices.archives.gov/orderonline/start.swe?SWECmd=GotoView&SWEPostnRowId=1-29XS&...

For those searching Glasgow there is also a Lookup Index for Names, Streets and Trades.

Re: Lair Records/MIs for Luss or Dumbarton
The text version is quicker to load, but you lose the formatting (in the full version e.g. you can see the size of house & no of bedrooms for each), but these are definately some of those mentioned above and probably all related to one another : M'Farlane, Alex, fisher. Shore house, Balernaig M'Farl...

Re: Lair Records/MIs for Luss or Dumbarton
Hi all (first post on TalkingScot, I've only been bitten by the genealogy bug quite recently) I found this thread via google research my branch of McFarlans from Luss/Rosneath having traced my 5x great grandparents to John McFarlan/Christian Colquhoun. Not got much further that I've managed to verif...
