Here is what I got back from the Mitchell. Unfortunately for me, the records only go back to 1848, but it might be useful to others: "I can confirm that we hold what records survive for the Reformatory (Archive Reference; D-ED7/146) but unfortunately it appears we do not have anything as early as 18...

Montreal City Directory 1842-1992 .....

The National Library and Archives of Québec has put up images of the Lovell City directories beginning in 1847. http://bibnum2.bnquebec.ca/bna/lovell/index.html I believe this site has not been listed yet on this forum (I think I heard about it through ReunionTalk). It is very helpful if you are try...

Thanks, Annette! That was an interesting little snippet. I wonder if all the boys were there because they had committed a crime, or if they took in homeless boys also. I have emailed the Mitchell for information and so far have only heard that they have relayed my request to the correct department.....

Annie,
You don't say what kind of computer you have, but if you use a Macintosh then Reunion, by Leister Productions, is excellent. There is a very helpful users forum as well.

Hi Bill, I note from the various Harp message boards that Tobias is a major brick wall for many people... Do you know where his birth information comes from? As you know, the trick is to find the name of the first family member who was NOT born in the U.S., so you can try to figure out where he was ...

Welcome Bill, At least you have an unusual name to work with... In the OPR births & baptisms on SP I only got 28 hits for that surname in Scotland. Looking at the 1790 U.S. census, I only see 22 Harp households in the whole country, most in North Carolina. Was that where your Harp family settled? I ...

Hi Donna, I tried out the pay-as-you-go on that site a few months ago and was very disappointed. My memory is that the search possibilities were quite limited and so gave w-a-y too many results. Each result was a series of pages on which you "might" find the person you are looking for (i.e. that con...

Found James Anderson working as a bricklayer in Winnipeg. The image is unclear, but looks like he says he came over in 1907 After that, I draw a blank. Just can't find William. :( Very frustrating, since I remember having seen a stonemason before I knew I should look for one-- but I can't find him a...
