Every time I read over this post (and my head starts spinning each time) I wonder whether or not the marriage was annulled because they were first cousins... is this a possibility? They stayed together, but the children were "illegitimate".

Well, it's a guess! :D

Thanks, David! I was hoping you'd chime in with the correct reference ! I'm planning a trip to Scotland 5 or 6 months from now and look forward to hearing for myself the distinction (or not) between Lallans and The Doric. When I was a student, that same professor had me transcribe several rec...

Very nice sleuthing, Jean! I was just going to add something here, when I saw your contribution had arrived in the meantime and made a lot more sense than what I was going to write! I saw Henrietta and Grizel, then was also looking at this other family with 5 daughters, one being Jane. Children of J...

My condolences, Mallog. Sounds like my maternal grandmother, who seems to prefer to remain a mystery (she died at my mother's birth, so we never knew her). Systematically, every place she ever lived has been demolished or whisked off into outer space. One was replaced by a new city government buildi...

Hi Lesley, Yes, I have already researched a circle around Mr. Higgins/Huggins and come to the conclusion that he was William Beers Huggins, who was born in New Haven, Connecticut but ran a shipping business in Glasgow at the relevant time. There is further talk of shipping "the Boy" over via Wm Hugg...
