Very many thanks to everyone. I intend to go to Kew when I can get it organised (hopefully before it starts its refurbishment or whatever it is in the "autumn") so perhaps I'll find something there. Without wishing to be a wet blanket, I'm afraid that it's the case that relatively little Rifle Volu...

David, does it say where/if records are kept? I don't think so, - it's 350+ pages, - but it's much more a history of the rifle volunteers across the UK rather than a "How To" book on researching such ancestors ...... Any such info that has survived should be at TNA at Kew, but who knows what there ...

Ta-da :!: The solution, - Ian Beckett's "Riflemen Form - A Study of the Rifle Volunteer Movement 1859 - 1908" arrived in this morning's post. It provides the info that one of the Renfrew corps of riflemen was the 15th (Kilbarchan) Rifle Volunteer Corps, formed in 20Jan1860. As no earlier date of ama...

....snipped........ The other line of attack might be to pin down Veronica's death date in Saskatchewan in the 1960's or 70's & apply for her DC? I hope to speak with the newly found uncle again soon and that will be my first question. .....snipped......... Given the problems in continuing working ...

Re: Download issues

I have been trying to do a bit of spring cleaning in my account at SP. I have about 6 pages of viewed images and have been downloading them/printing them off etc. I was merrily downloading when at about the third page it suddenly gave up. By this I mean that although I could view an image I couldn'...

Re: In Service

.....snipped..........Most staff lived in, maids mainly had just a room with bare essentials, Butlers and Head Housekeepers had the best, sometimes self contained flats. .....snipped.......... Ann The butler and his family, like one of my ggf's, often lived in the lodge. On the Wooden House estate,...

David - thank you. Just tried this but can't find anything relevant. Was Kiilbarchan militia part of Renfrewshire militia? I understood from what Russell said that it was a separate body. A deceptively easy question ! I can't find any reference to "Kilbarchan Militia". I suspect that one of the com...

The Scottish connection is actually via the 94th of Foot, the designation given to the Scotch Brigade who came onto the British establishment in 1794, - the Scotch Brigade were in Dutch Service for 215 years. The 94th were amalgamated in the 1881 Cardwell reforms with the 88th Regiment of Foot (Conn...

For "SS Afran" see http://www.churchinwales.org.uk/rb/ben.php?dosommat=detail&which=139 See also http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=47857 . "SS" had me fooled for a while, but it looks like it's an abbreviation for "Saints". Everything fits between the 1911 and 1907 marriage certific...

Andrew Jackson ceased to be the City of Glasgow archivist some years ago..............

It's always been the intention at some point to make at least the index available on-line but I haven't heard any mention of this for a long while.
