Re: John McLachlan and Isabella Campbell, Argyll

Following on from Wilma's finding of older son Duncan, I had a look for his death certificate and I found one that looks likely to be him - illegitimate son of Dugald McLachlan and Catherine Lamont. Died in the parish of Morvern in 1890, aged 68. Informant: Dugald McLachlan, son. Food for thought, A...

Re: Scottish Graveyard Scandals

In Edinburgh, construction work to extend the tramway through Leith is progressing. Archaeologists have been involved, particularly in Constitution Street, where under the existing roadway, they have found many skeletons. These are just outside the current boundary wall of South Leith Parish Church ...

Hi barnsleymeth2000, The only place you will find that level of detail is on the certificate itself which you will have to order a copy of. One source is Liverpool City Council. All the best, AndrewP

Re: Who was Mr. Gardner?

Hi Mixpal, There are various online references to William Gardener VC DCM (1821-1897). He was born in Nemphlar, Lanarkshire (in Lanark parish). He died in Bothwell, Lanarkshire 24 October 1897. His V.C. was awarded for an act of bravery on 05 May 1858 during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1858). https://en...

Re: Irish Widow In Scotland

Hi Mixpal,

It is worth having a look at the original document on the ScotlandsPeople website. There it looks like she is the widow of an officer of HM Customs Service.

Re: Suicides - general

Re: What does this say?

Hi Alan, The first mystery word could be "granted". The second mystery word could be two words and the first part of that could be "command", followed by a much shorter word. I admit to clutching at straws in trying to decipher this. I looked up the term "boxmaster" to see if the context would help....

Re: Astral House, Gray Road, Liff, Angus, Scotland.

Hi ChipChip, I looked up the death certificate of the lady whose name is given in the Edinburgh Gazette that you mentioned above. All three deaths on that page were at Astral House, Gray Road, Liff. Two of the three had a 'usual address' underneath the hospital, implying that the other was resident ...
