Re: Census 1921

The one date that is for sure is the earliest possible date legally - 20th June 2021. The census was for those in the house overnight on 19-20 June 1921, with a 100 year closure put on it. The ScotlandsPeople webpage that I found gives it as 2021 (no month or exact date given). https://www.scotlands...

Re: Furgeson, Forrest to Downie

I've had a quick look in the 1861 census on Ancestry and see in Dunoon: 17 Hill Foot Street, Dunoon . . Isabella Downie, age 40, head of household, innkeeper, born Whitburn (West Lothian) . . Helen Downie, age 14, daughter, born Airdrie (Lanarkshire) . . Elizabeth Twaddell, age 16, servant, domestic...

Re: Furgeson, Forrest to Downie

Is there any sign of the remaining family group/members in the 1861 or 1871 censuses? These could help fill in some blanks (or bring you some new questions).

All the best,

Re: Help proving or disproving hypothesis regarding Archibald Erskine, 7th Earl of Kellie

Following Wilma's trail of 'Dreel' places in Anstruther, the maps show the 'Dreel Burn' to flow through Anstruther and out to sea. On following the 'Dreel Burn' upstream you pass Kellie Mill, Kellie House and end out at Over Kellie. Unsurprisingly, these 'Kellie' locations are all quite near to Kell...

Re: Josiah Lorimer of Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire

Hi Geoff, I take it you have seen the 1841 census for the family group: Josiah (or Joseph), Mary, 8 children (ages from 12 down to 1 month), and a second adult Mary Lorimer/Lermer (of an age to be Josiah's sister). Unfortunately the 1841 census doesn't tell you the relationship of the family members...

Re: TalkingScot's 15th birthday

“Birthday bumps” or “dumps” are a tradition in Scotland, especially in school playgrounds, where the birthday boy or girl was pursued in order to be given “dumps” or “bumps” - usually a series of bumps on the behind with a knee, corresponding to the number of years the birthday person had now reach...
