Re: Pig Dealer

During the first 100 years of the national census, relationships with England were never better, and trade had never been stronger, so this is plainly nonsense. There was even a significant movement to do away with the term "Scotland", and replace it with "North Britain" (and England with "South Bri...

Re: Where would I have gone to school?

Hi Dennis

Unfortunately, your religion may have been a big factor in which schools you attended.

Re: Locating a Prorerty

Hi David

I suspect it's Craigcrook Road you want.

Try looking online for an Edinburgh Post Office Directory for around 1920. I had a quick look in the 1931-32 version, but no luck there. Craigcrook Road is not listed in 1913.

Re: Govan Poorhouse

Hi OzScot There have been several programmes on TV in UK recently, relating to the various (Scottish) poorhouses and (English) workhouses. It seems that each institution had its own medical facilities, and the poor were inclined to check themselves into the local poorhouse if they fell ill, and to c...

I suspect he said "whisky", rather than (Irish) "whiskey"!

Re: Scotch

Hi Andrew

"Scotch" was still in common usage around the beginning of the 20th century. Perhaps the world wars had some effect?

Re: Post Office Directories

Thanks, kenspeckle

Unfortunately my street (built 1910) has not made it into the suburban lists by 1911-12.

Re: Post Office Directories

Thanks, Alan

Giffnock gets a couple of pages in the "Suburban" section for 1940, but is not covered by the Street Directory. Presumably because it lies outside the Glasgow boundary.

Cheers

Post Office Directories

Hi

Are there any online Post Office Directories which cover the streets of Giffnock, or what is now East Renfrewshire? The Glasgow directories claim to include Giffnock, but not in 1911-12 or 1927 they don't.

Thanks.
