That's a really good document Lesley, thanks for taking the trouble - interesting to see that the concept of "care in the community" was alive and well even in 1680 :D

There's nothing new under the sun ...

Thanks for your help. (I'd still be interested to know ...

idiot, imbecile or lunatic? .....

This is troubling me (possibly for the future rather than the past)  Who decided whether a person came into the category of idiot/lunatic/ imbecile/ feeble minded, and how did they distinguish which was which - (or who was what). Was it up to the person who completed the schedule to deem ...

Hi Andrew - SP did point out that people could be indexed under any surname they'd been known by, but having checked the records agreed that this one was incorrectly indexed : Thank you for your e-mail and many apologies for this index error. Because people can be indexed under any name they may hav...

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I'm sure someone will point me in the right direction if I'm lost. I was searching recently for a marriage of an Alison Reid, and being in possession of a wealth of credits :D I set out with determination to find it, no expense spared. Howeve...

I love your story John - laughed out loud at the doctor! My husband's grandad used to give the top of his egg to his wife every morning (I assume she had something else to go with it!) - I love the picture that wee anecdote brings to mind. We have a photo of them as an elderly couple and their love ...

Jean Jeannie thanks for this post - I contacted Donna Johnston as I'm visiting Linlithgow this weekend and want to find some graves in Uphall - she came back quick as a flash and gave me the info I wanted, the others in the lair and a suggestion for another person buried before the cemetery opened. ...
