Re: David Dick, 34th (Fifeshire) Militia/93rd RoF (Sutherland Highlanders)
Hello Maurie, A couple of years ago I went looking for info on the Fifeshire Militia and this is as far as I got. http://www.talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=18905&hilit=regiments+archive It seems the missing records are those from before they left for England in July 1803. It would have b...

Re: Understanding a "close"
Hello Bill, This 1857-58 Ordnance Survey map has 56 segments. If you click on segment V1.11.12 and V1.11.17 (towards the bottom right corner of the main map) you’ll see that the area around High Street was riddled with closes. You can see where they connect to the street by a tunnel under a building...

Re: Looking for Philip Harper in 1911
Hello Meg, I had a look at this last week but didn’t get anywhere. If it is only the wife and young children who are missing maybe she was a suffragette, or a sympathiser, and boycotted the census. https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/learning/features/malicious-mischief-womens-suffrage-in-scotlan...

Re: 1921 Census
Look on the bright side. By the time this one turns up you’ll only have eight years to wait for the next one. Pity the poor English, for a proper census, they’ll have to wait until ………………….2051!

Re: Kirk Family in Victoria Australia
Hello Isk, Victoria used the same registration system as Scotland, so the parents of the bride and groom should normally appear on the marriage certificate. The parent’s names aren’t shown in the marriage index. http://www.jaunay.com/bdm.html The certificate can be downloaded for a fee of AUD$20.00 ...
