I was just going to post the IGI information, but Jean beat me to it :D There is also another one born in 1825, but that is probably too far out age-wise. I note that Scotland's People has three results between 1810 and 1820, but I don't have any credits to check what they are. Do you have all his r...

Jody,
If it's any help in diagnosing the problem, I also use a Mac and have no trouble seeing images in direct download mode. Maybe it's your choice of browser? I use Safari. I'll be interested to find out what the problem was.
All the best,

Hi Sheila, I always assumed the "housekeeper" was like the "keeps house" or "keeping house" that is often written on the U.S. censuses and was applied to the wife if she didn't have a job outside the home. I guess it's ambiguous, since a Housekeeper is also a kind of servant, as you say. All the bes...

Maud, Here is an interesting article that was featured in the Rootsweb Review about a woman searching for 7 1/2 years for the identity of a man in a portrait-- and finally succeeding. :D I thought it might encourage you! http://news.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060724/NEWS10/607240334/1002 A...

I'm sorry, Maud, nothing obvious is coming up. Could the photo have been of a Barr? Or was there no contact at all with his natural father's family? What was his father's first name? I think there are sites where one can post unknown photos to see if anyone recognizes them, but I can't remember wher...

Maud, There is a problem with the baseball outfit and the word "yankee"... since there is a baseball team called the Yankees! So the "second Yankee" might not refer to a second person born in the USA. But, it might! How old would you estimate the Alex in the photo is? I have tried looking in Youngst...

Hi Jack, Somehow I missed that 1851 database also :? but I think you're right that it can't be "my" John. Thanks anyway. When I can find out more about his father, there may be some clues that will help. I'm hoping to come to Scotland in October or November and plan to spend days at the Mitchell dig...

I still think the Puritans take the cake in terms of odd names. I have side branches in my tree with people like Deliverance Wakelyn, Experience Dart and Thankfull Shaylor. My all-time favorite name of a direct ancestor, however, has to be my ggggg grandmother Mindwell Bliss-- great name!
