Very moving, Annie. Thanks so much for posting the link! As my husband just said, there is nothing that can replace the actual voices of the people when you want to understand history and what their lives were like.

The 'T' of Tailor and the 'S' of Scholar are very similar, but the initial loop starts downwards for 'S' and upwards for 'T'. I think it is Tailor (and I also wonder if there is such a thing as an apprentice sailor...) To my eye, the 'T' in Teacher has exactly the same gesture and movement as that o...

Thanks Russell and Falkyrn! It is indeed interesting to read the discussions of what to do about the poor and to see the different opinions that were current at the time and the different angles from which they viewed the situation. I also dipped into the Glasgow Digital Library and found references...

Hi all, I understand from DavidWW's recently added FAQ that organized poor relief in Scotland only began in 1845. I have an ancestor who died in Glasgow apparently just before :-( the 1841 census and was more or less destitute at his death. It seems the poor relief would have been organized by the P...

Her adoptive mother refused all overtures from the birth relatives (including offered photos ) Fortunately, one of the nurses who cared for her in her first 10 months before adoption saved the letters from family,...

Thank you Annette!
I wondered about the difference in name, although I gave the librarian the correct information... I look forward to hearing if there are any records from the one that interests me.
Gratefully,
