Hi
Brand new at this so here goes...
My great granny Mary Alexander Glendinning Small b 1864 d 1948 her parents were Peter Small and Helen Train, I cant for the life of me find a connection to the Glendinning family, but...her big sister Beatrice b 1861 was visiting Alexander and Mary Glendinning in Crammond in 1871,the census says Niece, but I don't know enough about the Glendinning family, I know Alexander was Japers brother, and Alexander and Mary never had children,
any one researched the Glendinning's? and knows more
Thanks
Robbie

Re: Strange Midlothian Glendinning question
Hi, and a very warm welcome to
I did a search for the deaths of the 2 ladies in question:
1. Mary GLENDINNING died in 1887 St George , her mother's maiden name was GIRDWOOD a reverse search shows her maiden name to be Ketchin, confirmed by her marriage to Alexander in 1851 Liberton [spelled Ketchen].
2. Helen SMALL nee TRAIN's death in 1909 Glencorse shows that her mother was also a Kitchen.
So it looks as if Helen TRAIN may be a full niece of Mrs Glendinning, and the girls, Beatrice & Mary would be her great-nieces.
You'll have to go a little further back the generations to confirm that link.
If you are new to this fascinating hobby a couple of points to note:
a. spelling varies wildly betimes as seen with the 3 variations of KITCHEN above. Glendenning is another spelling noted. Names were written as the writer heard them and the owners likely couldn't read or write.
b. Married women are indexed under both maiden and married surnames in the death registers - so are much easier to locate. Mother's maiden names are also noted for all - but bare in mind that the information recorded is only as good as the informants' knowledge.
Hope that helps you a bit.

Re: Strange Midlothian Glendinning question
A little more information I've dug up:
Alexander Kitching married a Euphemia Girdwood in 1823/24
2 births are recorded James in 1823 Colinton, and Euphemia in 1830 Penicuik .
I think you'll have to find Helen TRAIN 's mother's name and trace her parentage to join the 2 families up with any certainty.
Though the naming pattern would suggest a strong link!
Peter and Helen seem to have quite a large family, around 10 born between 1856 and 1871.
You are on the cusp between Statutory [ from 1855] and Old Parish Records [pre 1855] so the older records may be patchy, though they do seem to stay roughly in the same areas of Midlothian.

Re: Strange Midlothian Glendinning question
Hi Wilma
Thanks for your advice, here's what I have
I have Mary Glendinning's headstone confirms death 24 May 1887
Helen Small nee Train her marriage certificate to Peter Small gives her parents as William Train and Beatrice Girdwood
I saw the reference to Ketchen (Kitchen) on the death cert 1909 under Helen Small, the same lookup for Train is identical... where is the Ketchen link
More homework !!
I use an excel spread sheet for controlling the info and I have started with Alexander Kitching and Euphemia Girdwood
The 1841 census has them living in Penicuik with other family members under Ketchen 697/ 3/ 7
The 1851 census was a bit of a mission, but still living in Penicuik under Hitchin and Ritchen 697/ 3/ 3
The 1864 census still in Penicuik under Ketchen 697/ 3/ 8 with two other Ketchen's Janet and Elizabeth
Euphemia died in 1874 in Penicuik mothers name Brown
I assume Alexander died between 1841 and 1851 he's in the 41 census but not the 51
Now to try and sort out Helen Train with Ketchen mums name
The link must be between Train, Girdwood, and a.n. other
Suppose it keeps us young
I live in Johannesburg South Africa, so doing this via Scotland's people is expensive, I am loath to load credits until I am sure
I was born in Edinburgh and brought up in Roslin, my family search is Lamb, from Kirriemuir, Notman (my Granny) Small, Train and the new ones you find.
Stay well
Robbie
