Off on a dander...

Hi all,

A quick note to say that I'm reluctantly moving on from using the TS forum - life's getting just a bit too busy these days! I'll still be floating around in other spheres, so will see a few of you around from time to time!

Thanks all - and do keep an eye out for my monthly columns in Ancestors, Practical Family History, and Your Family Tree, and the occasional piece in Family History Monthly - you won't always see me credited, but if you see the word 'Scotland' appear, there's a fair chance I might be involved lol

For those of you, like me, whose ancestors left Scotland several hundred years ago, and who were afraid Chris was going off in a huff (e.g. expressions like "get your dander up" etc.) here is what the Concise Scots Dictionary has to say:

dander: vi stroll, saunter; n a stroll, leisurely walk

I'm relieved!

Sorry, it's an Ulsterism - 'on a dander', means the same as the Australian walkabout - it has a Scottish Gaelic equivalent, the verb a' meanrainn, and in Scotland I think is the same as a donner or donder (or so l've been told!). A well known phrase over here - but I hope that clarifies it!

There's quite a few other regular Scottish contributors to these magazines who would be quite surprised to read that the Scottish content is mostly down to Chris Paton !!!
