Nettie or Hettie

Post by speleobat2 » Fri Apr 08, 2016 5:59 pm

I came across a US census record for a girl who's name is shown as either Nettie or Hettie depending on how you read it. Any guesses as to what her full first name would be? I've never had either Nettie or Hettie in my family and I can't find a birth record for this one.

Nettie could be Annette or even Agnes. Hettie could be Henrietta, as could Nettie. Sure people will have other suggestions.

Thanks Anne! I had thought of Henrietta, but not Agnes and Agnes is fairly common in our family. The US census records aren't very good prior to about 1870 and the 1890 census which I could really use burned in a fire in the Treasury building I forget when. This girl was born in 1861 and birth records seem to be hard to find for that time period. Will keep hunting!

My grandmother was always known as Nettie, but her name was Jane! I always thought her name was Jeanette until my Dad put me right, just before I gave my first daughter the middle name Jeanette after her! (So her middle name is Jane, correctly.)

I'm making a list of possibilities to check out. Nicknames certainly complicate the search. This woman went on to have a niece named Effie. I should know that one, but for the life of me I can't think what it is short for! Thanks for any help!
