Glasgow Photographer

Post by geofola » Fri Apr 12, 2019 1:24 am

I have a photo of 6 aunt's & 1 uncle, plus my grandparents that was taken in Glasgow early 1900's. The photographer was J. Drummond Shiels, at 49 Jamaica St. Glasgow.

Does anyone know when this photographic studio opened for business & closed. I am trying to put a year to the photo.

Hello Geoff,

There's a bit of information about the Glasgow studio on this site. http://www.edinphoto.org.uk/pp_n/pp_shiels.htm

I checked the Glasgow Post Office directories and he appears to be there only for years 1903/04 to 1911/12 and is listed under the name of “Shiels, J. Drummond, 49 Jamaica street.”

1902/03 - no entry - https://archive.org/details/postofficea ... /page/1228
1903/04 - entries start - https://archive.org/details/postofficea ... /page/1248
1911/12 - entries end - https://archive.org/details/postofficea ... /page/1360
1912/13 - no entry - https://archive.org/details/postofficea ... /page/1350

Hope that's useful,
Alan

According to "Lanarkshire Photographers to 1914" [published by GWSFHS] James Drummond Shiels (junior) was in business at that address from 1903 to 1914
