A futile search?

Hello again all.
Football players of all things. A quick query for I have no idea where to look.
I am trying to find anything I can on a great uncle who was a professional footballer in Scotland, during the 1920s.
His football career must have been done and dusted by 1931 for he was a labourer when he married in that year.
He was Joseph (Joe?) Ramsay, born 1903 and he lived in Glasgow. I have no idea who he played for.
Does anyone know of a site where a person could access details of past players or newspaper articles.

Hi Billymac,

I see a possibility in Partick Thistle (Glasgow). A Joe Ramsay played for them in a match in 1924 against Liverpool.

Looks like he was a goalkeeper according to the second article above, which would go along with him being player "1" in the first article.

You can access a variety of newspaper archives and much more via the National Library of Australia and the State Library of NSW, but you need a readers card. They would normally be obtained online here.

The Glasgow Herald is available there but only to 1900. Google has made this newspaper available online up to the 1980s. The search is useless, and image quality varies, but you can browse if you know the date. You can follow his career (and adventures) there. https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid= ... de=2&hl=en

The Joe Ramsay Andrew found seems to fit the picture.

“Arbroath Executive yesterday succeeded in securing the transfer of Joe Ramsay, a goalkeeper from Crystal Palace. He will figure in the team to meet East Fife on Satrurday. Ramsay was formerly with Partick Thistle, and his brilliant displays for the Firhill club marked him as one of the finest ‘keepers in the country.”

Arbroath Footballer Stops a Runaway
“Mr Joe Ramsay, Arbroath Football Club’s well-known goalkeeper, performed a daring act in bringing to a standstill a runaway horse.
The animal, yoked to a fish lorry, made off from the foot of High Street, and, galloping along that thoroughfare, turned into Commerce Street.
As the runaway was passing over the Brothock Bridge, Ramsay made a leap onto the lorry, and then jumped onto the back of the horse, secured a hold of the reins, and brought the animal to a standstill.”

(There was a lot of that sort of thing going on in the silent movies of the time but your Joe Ramsay managed it in real life, the only thing missing being the damsel in distress driving the runaway.)
