Springvale?

Post by billymac » Tue May 13, 2025 1:41 am

Hello all,
I have a marriage registration of a brother of my G-G_grandfather who married (RC) in Springvale, Springburn in 1855. Just a little curious about this Springvale. I would image that Springburn was a pretty small village itself at that time and not have smaller villages within it. I would be grateful if anybody could shed some light.
Best regards,
Bill

Hi Billy,
as is often the case, a quick look at some old maps helps get a better sense of things.
Springvale House is just south of the 'original' Springburn and there a cotton mill bearing the name too.
Around the Cowlairs Station area.

The big house doesn't appear on later maps.
St Aloysius RC Church was [and still may be] just north of there, so I expect that's where they married.

the virtuall mitchell has a couple of images:
https://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtual ... 7133177868
and canmore refers to it as Springvale Railway Village:
https://canmore.org.uk/site/169243/glas ... ay-village ,
and has a photo of the mills in modern times
https://canmore.org.uk/site/167794/glas ... oy-factory

Other sources say it was built to house the mill workers owned by J Findlay who lived in the Springvale house.
what was your chap's occupation? was he a mill worker.
Wilma

Thank you so much Wilma. That has given me a clearer idea and better understanding of the link between the two places. And yes, the St Aloysius Chapel cropped up in many of my early family marriages.
