I have to confess to being ADDICTED to diet bru. I am sure it runs through my veins and several attempts to wean myself off it have failed. I get antsy if I can't get it and not very nice to live with, scarey or what?!

BUT I don't beleive it is any more damaging for me that any of the other 'fizzy's' available out there.

Well, I caught one of my son's friends adding Irn Bru to his whisky  Apparently it's quite popular down here

I had to go and lie down in a darkened room

Having travelled extensively on business to Sweden in the 70's and then lived there for most of the 80s, I'm very familiar with Swedish aquavit - I can't give you a www reference as they all refer to just the inclusion of caraway seeds as flavouring, - that may well be the case, but the whole point of aquavit is that a whole range of different herbs are used to flavour the very many different Swedish (and Norwegian and Danish) regional varieties.

One of the perfect combinations that I have had the great guid fortune to come across during my life is the Swedish dish of Baltic herring, - there are various optional and different possible accompaniments, - but the one essential such is a glass of ice-cold aquavit, - my Swedish favourite is the version from the southern province of Skåne, but in Norway I'd go for Linje, in Denmark for Aalborg, but in Finland for Koskenkorva vodka!, - see http://everything2.com/index.pl?node=aquavit for a brief aquavit summary  . Be aware that, depending on the herbs used for flavouring, the method of maturing the spirit, the age, the taste can vary very widely.

An optional extra is a chaser of a traditional "German style" top brewed lager .......... the most widely produced style of lager in Scandinavia.

In the 70s when I was travelling regularly to Sweden, the agent of the company for which I worked very soon sussed out my great delight at the combination of Baltic herring and Skåne aquavit.

On subsequent visits to the UK, he then brought with him as a present a bottle of Skåne aquavit.

Great, but what do you then do with that in the UK? .

Baltic herring is not that easy to obtain, - there used to be a Danish company in the UK that supplied Scandinavian foodstuffs, but it cost an arm and a leg  , and we're just not set up in the UK to serve a spirit such as aquavit ice-cold, - this requires little dishes into which is placed crushed ice in which the teeny-weeny aquavit glass sits, since, please believe me, you don't really want to taste aquavit at room temperature :!:

Placing a bottle of aquavit in the freezer, BTW, involves an unfortunate chemical reaction involving the separation of various components, resulting in a horribly cloudy spirit that is no longer aquavit!!

So what to do :?: :!: , given the ever increasing number of unused bottles of Skåne aquavit in the Webster household, - it just wasn't socially acceptable to tell the Swedish agent that the gift was problematic

A wee bit of experimentation solved the problem, but it took some effort, since the required investigation revealed that all but one mixer didn't work, but I can guarantee you that the combination of Skåne aquavit and bitter lemon mixer is quite superb :!: :P

Bobby

And heres me thinking it was only Western Australia that was the nanny state, the ban everything brigade is alive and kicking over here too.
So it is not just in Scotland either, it is a world wide phenomenon to ban everything, and all the grown ups are banned from uttering a word

HI Folks

Not a great lover of Irn Bru myself but I saw an article in the paper the other day which said that their sales are up in England. 7% I think. Is nothing sacred!!
