For someone stuck waaaay out here in the Dominion I have to say I am enjoying this conversation. My gran never spoke much about her life before Canada. Could someone enlighten me as to Ne'er Day, I have heard some Scottish terms in my childhood but not this one.

Many thanks Mary, I recall my gran calling it something else, cant remember what,(sign of advancing age Im afraid) But I do recall it was a time of celebration for gran, unless of course my sister walked through the door first. She was a natural red head, and granny put that on the level of black cats and evil eye etc.

In my family we never take the chance of that happening. We make sure there is a dark haired man outside the door ready to be our first foot. When my husband was alive, being of latin ancestry and dark, he was very popular with all our neighboursLuAnn wrote:She was a natural red head, and granny put that on the level of black cats and evil eye etc.

Hogmanay would be it thank you Isabel. And Mary, my dad was dark haired and he knew that his going through the door first was what my gran wanted, but he used to like to get her temper up I think, and used to send my sister ahead of him.Wicked boy!
