According to one interpretation, there are reckoned to be 18 measures in a standard 75cl bottle of Scotch (whatever that was before metrication), otherwise reckoned to be equivalent to a wee dram for every hole on a golf course of 18 holes .....

This "tradition" most probably falls flat on its face in the sense that it wasn't until comparatively recently that it was established that the standard number of holes for a golf course is 18, - in earlier days there was no such standard ..............

Still, it's a nice wee tale :!:

On the brighter side.
Whisky, in comparative money terms, is a lot cheaper the day that it was in the 1930s
I was born in the late 40's and I can remember my father saving up for his "Hogmanay bottle".

All through my childhood and into my early teens, that was the only time he could afford to have a full bottle of whisky in the house, and he was quite well paid as a carpet weaver..

Nardinis I remember them well.

A" Knickerbocker Glory" was my favourite.
Whenever we went to Largs that was the first place I headed for.

My brother- in -law took me there 3 years ago when I was on a trip back to the U K but my Ice cream did not taste the same after all these years !!

Oh Mallog,

Are you in Ayr? If I'd a known! As if it wiznae bad enough missin the get the gither in Glaesga!

Ma sister in law stays in Dreghorn noo. We hid her hoose fur the week she wiz oan her honeymoon. An if anybody tells me they were at NHR on the 21/22 August, I'll scream...........

Funny thing happened while a wiz at Ayr though.

About 3 years ago I had Air Conditioning pit in the hoose. When they came to start the job, the gaffer opened his mouth and this wedgie accent asked me ma name , and I asked him where he came fae? Turned oot he wiz fae Maryhill. It then turns oot that he had a sister that stayed in Linwood,(where I was raised), and I knew her. I used tae babysit his niece years ago.

Anyway, I'm sittin watching ma wains and hiself playing when I see this guy. Looks familiar! Decide tae try and get his attention ,so I shout his name. He looks roon. Try again. He looks roon again. What are the chances? It wiz Billy. He wiz hame fur a family weddin, just like me.

So, whit am I trying tae say here? I travel 3000 miles and the only person I meet is a guy that lives 10 minutes away fae me here. Whit's the chances?

Canny be helped Christine :(

Not like Billy it seems you can't get away from him ! The first time was coincidence enough never mind your trip to Ayr.

It's funny when you're away a far place and you think you don't know anyone. Next thing you know someone is shouting your name. It's happened to me.

Can we make it a wee soiree. I was disappointed to have to miss the last event.
Come Saturday I'll be dressed up in the 'formals' for the waddin and after that real retirement begins. 'Yippee'
Could we bring along the instruments and sing some o' them?
Coulter's Candy and a few Bothy ballads then finish off with the 'Freedom come all Ye'.
The DVDs are a great idea.
Greetin's Russell,
(And aw)
Hope the Wean's big day (an' yer ain) went aff weel.
Nae traditional faimily fights?
Which, as we aw know, wid be stairtit, dead easy, by the wummin'..
With comments like: “Who gote Granny’s broach, when the hoose wiz cleared?”
“ Ma maw left me the mantle cloak tae me, no tae you, ya grabbin’ hoor”

Perhaps yoose Lassies think I am being a tad cynical here?
Or ah um alone when mindin' family waddins?

Lookin’ fawr stories frae yoose lot oan this statement!!!

Wance ye huv recovered Russell,
I wull certainly be up urr wan o’ yon wee swarees,
Love the fact that we mibbie huv a few chanters and punters that kin play a tune.
But it wullnie be me, ah collect and ken the words, but kin haud a tune like Sidney Devine.
Enough said!
