Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone still posts on these boards as everything listed is 2007. So is there anyone out there?

Hi Elizabeth,

This is a quiet part of the forum. Only 4 posts so far in 2008. Other parts of the forum are much busier.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Elizabeth,
Don't know why this has been so quiet but I will start it going again.
I remember as a small child on the outskirts of Glasgow, stealing rhubarb from the rhubarb fields, is there anything like that around Glasgow anymore?
Can't really remember doing any really bad things as a child.
apart from the rhubarb, I used to sometimes spend my penny bus fare on a stick of licorice root or a stick of cinnamon and then have to walk home.
This was during ww2 and of course no sweets or lemonade, or Irn Bru drinks although I think some shops made something called "pop".
What early memories do others have?

Welcome Elizabeth,
Hi Wini,I know there were still Rhubarb fields,on outskirts of Paisley around 10 yrs ago.Remember everyone who'd been working at it was walking about double in two
Remember my late hubby, telling me of all the things he got up to
Stealing crab apples, etc as a kid.
When we moved to this house almost 30yr ago, there was a lovely big Rhubarb Patch. Its still there, and weve had great produce from it,but this yr,theres a big funny bit growing fron the centre :o
Will have to find out if thats it gone to seed!
Anyone know?

Hi Nancy:

When rhubarb goes to seed, it shoots up very high, with what looks like cone-shaped miniature cauliflowers, which then develop into seeds that look like dried tomato seeds with a transparent skin.

Not to worry, if it's gone to seed, just trim it back. It's not permanently damaged when it goes to seed and will be fully recovered for next year.

Hi Frances, thanks for that.I was trying to think how to describe it and thought, yes a bit cauliflower looking
I just let my neighbour help herself to it,as she has a young family,so she always gives me share of the crumble,or whatever she's made with it. :D
Fair exchange I suppose as it saves me any bother
I'll ask her to trim it back too

I just had a stick of rhubarb and a wee poke of sugar, delicious! and from the same patch that has been growing there for the last thirty years  I dont know if you are meant to dig it up every so often, but it always tastes good.

I was just saying to someone today how I can't seem to grow rhubarb in my garden and remember how it used to grow like a weed. I'm going to try again. Have you seen the price of it in the supermarket

Your talking of "pop" made me think of Creamola Foam and the wee tin
