Hi Gilbert
..and welcome to Talking Scot. :D

To save us coming up with things you may have seen already, can you tell us a wee bit about what research you have already covered? Have you found Your William in any of the census years for example? That would be a good way to find out more about the family.

Do you have the entries for William's 1880 death you mentioned, and possibly also his birth and marriage entries?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Gilbert

Can I ask where you got details of Thomas from. I am possibly being a bit dense but the only Thomas I can find born Jedburgh at that time is the son of John Elliot and Janet Murdie. I can't find a marriage for Archibald and Anna Maria either but suppose it might not have been recorded.

Do you have any further details which might help?

Enlightenment dawns!! Your William is given as a saddler and his parents are Archibald Elliot and Anna Maria Burns.

As you say his father seems to have been a joiner or wright and his mother is given on the convenient baptism certificate of all the children as Moriah Burns.

Children

Margaret 14 Sept 1806
Thos 26 Mar 1808
William 6 Mar 1810
John 1 Dec 1811
Martha 29 Oct 1815

Can't find the parents' marriage at all.

If you look at William's second marriage certificate you will see that Archibald is dead by 1871 and in fact it would appear he is dead by 1841 as Anna Maria is on the census in Jedburgh with William, James and Thomas all saddlers.

There are various Archibald Elliot births which might match but it is difficult to tell which is he as there are no obvious clues from the fathers' names.

It is probable I have told you nothing you don't know already and I'm not sure you're going to find out a lot more about Archibald. However have you taken a look at William's will which is available on Scotland's People? Unlikely to tell you anything about Archibald but would probably be interesting.

Cheers

Anne

Thomas, son of Archibald and Anna Maria dies in 1866. Can't read his occupation on his DC.
