I have just been sent some old photgraphs many without names or places, there was also an account and a receipt from the above restaurant for the wedding of my parents in June 1938.
The total cost was 13pounds 12 shillings.
25 guests + 1 juvenile at 5 shillings a head. Cake cost 2 pounds 10 shillings and they really splurged on the alcohol 1 Bottle Port and 1 and a half bottles of Sherry.
Changed times

The Ca'doro was at 120-122 Union Street, Glasgow
I don't suppose that is there anymore.

Hi wini,

The building is very much still there!!

Key in Ca' D'Oro Building and you'll be able to choose from lots of sites - lots of pictures too!

The building was seriously damaged by fire (about 15 years ago?) but the facade survived and was preserved in the reconstruction.

According to reports it was 1987 (doesn't time fly........... :D )

I thought I could find something in the Times archives - maybe somebody else will have more luck. I couldn't find anything about the fire but a wee bit about it the history here.

Annette

Here it is Annette.

The fire was on Black Friday, 13th March, 1987.

Evening Times for 13th March, page 3.

Evening Times for 14th March, front page.

Some Glasgow Herald issues are missing from Google News Archive around this time.

All the best,
Alan

Hello Annette,

The Google News Archive search facility is pretty well useless most of the time. After floundering around there for a while I googled and found this ScotlandsPlaces page with a fire damage photograph and a 15th March date. http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/searc ... S&id=44139

It had to be before then so I checked the Evening Times front page thumbnails and the ‘Saved’ on the 14th jumped out at me and the main article was the day before. Relatively straightforward thanks to the Evening Times prominent photographs and headlines.

All the best,
Alan

How strange the very first time I use talking scot there is a forum on the Ca'doro Restaurant. My first husband was a chef in the restuarant in the late 1950's
