Baldy Bain ***Birthday Bumped post***

Post by joette » Sun Oct 30, 2005 3:41 pm

Anybody remember Baldy Bain as in "Whats your name?" "Baldy Bain"
"WHats your other" "Ask my Mother".
When the eldest of my charges was little I would recite this to him. If you asked him what his name was he would answer"Andrew Baldy Bain"
One day we went to EalingCommon where a huge fair was taking place.Somehow this just turned two year old disappeared.I was frantic as there was no way he could have gotten out of the area we were in without me seeing him so I had him dead & buried at the worst, crying his eyes out at best. I lost it which is unusual for me but it was tears, snotters on the face the works..
Through the crowd I heard a tinny tannoyed voice"Would Mrs Baldrick-Bain please come..."
There was Andrew holding onto the only Policeman in the place. He had approached the Policeman telling him that his grown-up had lost him.On being asked his name had replied off course"Andrew" & your other"Baldy Bain".
Talk about a nation divided by a common tongue.

best wishes

May I say that Andrew Baldy Bain has now graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Civil Engineering and is now happily ensconced in his first job and home. And he still calls me every fortnight. As does his student younger brother.I am so proud of their achievements and the fact they are such nice, mature, responsible kind young men.I am glad that I had a hand in raising them with no children of my own they are my legacy to the World.Oh and their parents for their including me in so much of their family life.
Off to stay with them next month for a few days.Nice to know that the many miles apart has not meant out of mind.

"What's yer name?"
"Baldy Bain!"
Where d'ye Live?"
"Doon the lane!"
"What d'ye keep?"
"A little shop!"
"What d'ye sell?"
"Ginger pop!"
It has taken me this long to remember all the words!

=D> \:D/ [cheers] \:D/ =D>

“Birthday bumps” or “dumps” are a tradition in Scotland, especially in school playgrounds, where the birthday boy or girl was pursued in order to be given “dumps” or “bumps” - usually a series of bumps on the behind with a knee, corresponding to the number of years the birthday person had now reached (and sometimes an extra one for luck!). For more info about Scottish birthday dumps or bumps, see
