TATTIE SCONES

Post by wini » Wed Dec 13, 2006 5:18 am

The only connection to Genealogy this has is that my Granny used to make them.
She was from Skye, although after she married she lived in Glasgow.
Grandad joined the Police.
I have tried but can't get them right, who makes them and can I have the recipe?

"Tattie Scones" need a "Floury" Potato and a hot Girdle or Frying Pan for them to be right.

From the Tradional Scottish Recipe Book.

1 lb Potatoes Mashed
Salt
4ozs Plain Flour

Mash Potaoes and a little Salt until quite smooth.
Knead with Flour to required thickness.Cut into triangles.
Brown on both sides, pricking with a fork to prevent blistering.

Enjoy!!

My mother always mashed her potatoes while hot with melted butter - she said it made a difference to the consistency.

When I first came to live in England in the early 70's no-one seemed to stock them, so I started making my own from my Gran's recipe (same as you've given, Maureen).

Even though they are widely available now, I still sometimes do a batch just for old times sake :D

The one thing I will never change, and I don't care what it's doing to my arteries, I always cook them in the bacon fat. They just don't taste the same any other way!

I love the Irish version(see it was all that Irish blood I didn't know I had)
Mashed Potato-any amount
Flour-enough to bind potato
Spring Onions-enough to taste but not overpower-chopped roughly
Egg-beaten & add -you might need to add more flour as mixture should be doughy not sloppy.
Fry on both sides until brown.Serve with bacon.eggs, tomatoes etc.
Yeh cannae whack it & I sometimes throw in the Scottish variety too.

Was my family the only one to call tattie scones "pigs´ears" ?????

And yes, they were good! Must be forty years or more since I tasted one - or two, with plenty of butter... :D

Thrall,

Hi Mary,

I agree, they just don't taste right unless they are cooked in the bacon fat........my mouth is watering for some right now.
