I found the link to TalkingScot on ScotlandsPeople. There are lots of useful tips and bits of information. Hopefully I will be able to contribute as and when from my own meanderings through OPRs and other records.

Researching:
Sutherland, McKay, Shearer and Waters in Thurso
Ireland in Fife, Greenock
Archibald in Greenock, Dundee and Ulster
Wilson, Craise in East Lothian, Berwickshire
Morrison in Greenock and Paisley

Hi Robert,

Welcome to talkingscot.

I see you are chasing rellies in Greenock. Most of my ancestors came from the Isle of Islay and Jura and ended up in Greenock. I was born and raised there, but now live in Southern California.

Regards,

Ina

Hi Ina,

Thanks for the welcome. We used to communicate from time to time on another message board. Perhaps you remember?

I thought I was a Greenockian from 'way back until I started researching and discovered that I resulted from a "merging" of Caithness, Paisley, Fife, Scottish Borders and Ulster genes. Although, I expect that those were only staging posts and if can get a bit further back, other parts of the British Isles may be involved.

Best wishes,

Robert

Hi Robert,

Ah....now the cat's out of the bag. I know exactly who you are.

Did you know that Cattie's husband just died? Haven't seen you around and thought you might like to know, and send condolences.

Good luck with your searches.

Kind Regards,

Ina

By Chance...

I found my way here an hour or so ago (West Coast, USA time!) when the site came up as I was Googleing for a definition of 'quoad sacra'. My Latin is more than a bit rusty. I didn't find the definition I was looking for--but TS looks like a great site that will be very useful in my family history research!

Hi Duncan,
Welcome to Talking Scot! [scotland-flag]
Glad you found your way here. If you have any genealogical brick walls involving Scottish ancestors, ask away! We enjoy a good puzzle...
If you have a look at the Essential Reading and How To forums on the notice board, you should be prepared to start posting your questions.
All the best,
Sarah

P.S. I assume your search led you to DavidWW's post:

Hi Duncan,

I echo Sarah's welcome.

TS just added a PPP, which you'll find the button for at the top of this page. Its an excellent presentation explaining how our board works to our new members.

Regards
Marilyn
