1841 census any suggestions welcome

Hi Anne,
I had just come to the same conclusion! After looking at those blotted pages (or whatever it is) it seemed probable they might have been under the spilled ink

They certainly don't seem to be anywhere else...
It's not you, Lesley, it's whoever knocked over the ink pot!

It is a shame that they are likely not there to view, but at least it was not one of those cases where the 1851 was my only chance to see them or anything...whew!

There is a note on ancestry about the 1851 census pieces that were damaged by water
In addition, the census returns of the following localities have been damaged by water during storage. Most of the damaged pieces are in the area of Manchester. There is a list of the areas which includes this one

2220 Lancashire Manchester Ardwick Chorlton-upon-Medlock

I think the Family History people in England did produce a transcription of these pieces. They had a really inexpensive purchase price for their data - but it has now been transferred to findmypast

http://www.familyhistoryonline.net/ (original site). The site does still list the data it used to have! which includes

Manchester 1851 Census (unfilmed)16 places 193,113 entries 25Dec2006

So it may be available somewhere on Findmypast

Hi again Lesley

Not sure how much info you have or are looking for in relation to this family but there is a likely marriage for a James Smith in Stoubridge in the December quarter of 1849. In the same district and page is an Ellen Albut. Just the right date for a Jun quarter of 1850 birth. The reference is 18/697.

I don't know but I think Ellen just may be the Eleanor Albut born to John Albut and Mary in Stoke Prior which seems to be in Worcestershire in 1830. The Worcestershire may be a problem but it seems to me that all of these counties are terribly close and places shift back and fore between them.

Yes, I'd noted that marriage. I hadn't looked for a birth yet. I'm totally lost in England!!

No idea where anywhere is, distances beween places, what county is where and what is next door to it, which registration district is in what county....

I'm learning, but slowly!

I've had a quick look on Find My Past, just to see what was available, and if using the search for 1851, it suggests that the only counties I can search at present are Dorset or Norfolk. Looks like a "work in progress", just now

The 1851 census is not yet complete. The remaining counties will be added over the coming months.

The following site seems to suggest it will happen, but gives no indication of when.

There is a also a name search there, from which you can click to see the other names on the page. Quite useful, though no firm sightings yet....but had a giggle at this pair;

They were definitely transcribed on the familyhistoryonline site. (I did look some up at least 2 years ago) I am not sure why the transcriptions aren't available at find my past - how annoying. I would have thought to find them here - but they are not mentioned

I've sent findmypast an email to query if they have the data. According to the site you mentioned the transcription was finished in 2008 - perhaps the search you found is now all that exists.

I'm suitably confused Lesley, but the answer from FMP is that the orange circle on the family history site indicates

data not on findmypast yet - some societies are contributing to the 1851 transcription, others have not signed agreement I assume from their reply that the census is the right area to check, but they didn't explicitly say that.

so whether it will get to fmp ?? It was so easy to search on the family history site - I guess all things change.
