Anne,

Have you looked on www.rootsireland.ie for your Browns?
It is expensive to view the record but the searches are free.
Best of all I've just found the marriage record for my gt gt grandparents there - one I never thought I'd find :D

Best wishes,
Meg

Realised I did not thank Annette sufficiently for pointing me towards the birth in Ireland. Though it is 'bad news' I am really grateful for the steer in that direction and will vigorously follow it up.

No special thanks required Anne - I felt the dread too when I saw it. :D

I found a report in the Belfast News - Letter (Sept. 20th 1869 and also in 1870) of a George Brown, Cloth Printer who was part of a large committee for the Workmen's International Exhibition. I wonder if this could be him.

Regards,
Annette

Thanks Annette. That sounds really hopeful that it is him. I wonder what his role was. Is the newspaper accessible online?

Hello Anne,

The Belfast News-Letter is part of ‘British Library 19th Century Newspapers’. You can access it from home using a National Library of Scotland membership card. https://auth.nls.uk/ldc/browse.cfm?by=subject&sid=99

If you qualify for Aberdeen City Council library membership you can also get access from them. Having more than one source can sometimes be useful. http://www.aberdeencity.gov.uk/Librarie ... ources.asp

All the best,
Alan
