With
that spelling I'd expect the Francis to be male
But spelling of names is often wrong on census material

so could be either....
Best wishes

The "rule" is that if the name includes "i" it's a "him", or if "e" a "her" .....

My grandmother b. 1893 was registered as Francis, so not always followed. Then again, this was in Australia with a family from Cornwall & no doubt the registrar did the spelling.

Hi Trish
They do say there's always an exception to the rule
Thank you for that, just may be that the bloke here did the same

Hi Jean
I am beginning to think that your idea of the Isabellas mother and daughter may be sound. ''Granny'' Gray I think on recollection died perhaps in the mid fifties and I seem to remember my Aunt Isabelle saying she was quite elderly at the time. This would mean she would need to have been born in the 1870 ish period perhaps, so the Isabella, her daughter, would have been perhaps late 30s when I met her as a wee child.
I must try again on Scotlands People I think!
By the way, I see you are looking for the name Sturgeon. I've been a consultant in Fine Art for many years, and knew a very fine artist of that name who lived in Somerset, is he a relation of yours?
Thanks for your help once again.
Dorothy

Hello Dorothy
The age of the daughter Isabella (being an infant in 1901) would put her actually early 40's perhaps when you met her....but her mother not dying until 1950's fits with your latest recollection. I spose it is possible that the daughter Isabella may have had a daughter of her own named Isabella..perhaps never marrying.....but there is no way to trace births online newer than 1905....so that one is pure speculation at the moment!! Hope you've managed to at least locate some of the records on SP by now. If you're having further trouble just come back and yell and we'll see what we can do to assist!
As for my Sturgeon line.....Why yes

....I'm sure that a famous artist must surely fit into my tree somewhere

.....but alas I've not found any connections in that direction. Mine were in County Down and came to Dailly before 1851. My GrGrGrandfather did drift down to Staffordshire and manage to marry and live a few years in Gloucestershire before returning as a widower to Ayr to live out his life. I've not found any connections that would explain his travels into England though.
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Dorothy,
I have Gray's in my family and one, Andrew Gray hails from Ayrshire. He was in the Ayrshire Yeoman Cavalry and one of his sons William was born in Kilmarnock in 1822 and the OPR says he was child 11! I am trying to establish more about Andrew but it is slow going.
Good luck with your searching.
Annie

Searching: Pow - Stirlingshire, Pender - Paisley, Gray - Alva, Paisley, Elderslie, Canning - Stirling, Morrison, Innes and Wilson - Glasgow to name a few!
