Dave,

I filled out a similar census here in the USA last year. I certainly wouldn't want any of that information released until long after I'm gone.

Hi Ina
Ah hope ye tell’t the truth oan it.
Ah filled mine in anaw.
C’mon hen, tell me yer age and ah promise no tae tell oanywan else oan here.
Well, no furr at least 70 years.
OK ma mathS isnae too guid.
If someone born in 1921 wid be 86 years auld this year.
An’ ah know a few octogenarians, visiting a few in nursing homes recently.
I don’t know any o’ thaem that wid gie a monkeys, whit ther rellies were up tae the noo, never mind 80 year ago.
And I do take every wan else’s point aboot the 100 year promise.
I just think it is way out of date.
Who would have dreamt then, that ther wid be so mony o’ us plebs interested in family history the day.
For my own real point of view, I think the policy the noo is ageist anaw.
Ah’m 60, (ah promise) and waaant tae see the 1921 census right NOW.
In fact, wey ma last medical report, ah waant tae see the morra.
All that wee rant aside.
I have in front of me as I type, the report of the 1911 census for Glasgow.
So if ye would like to know how mony commercial clerks were employed is the toon then, ah’m yer man.

Having followed this discussion, I understand it is to do with promises made. I am in the minority here who would dearly love to see later census. Being an elderly person I would give anything to find this family of whom I search every day to no avail.
I care nothing of poverty , unemplyment and illegitimacy, in my long life I can vouch for the first two, being taken to England in 1934 because my father could find no work in Scotland. If there were a 1930 census I would be in it and proudly so. It is noted recently in the British Press 40% people chose not to marry. I would guess they found this from the last censes? Being illegitimate being stamped in our birth certificate as it was in my g grandmother's day.

Hi Lizzie

I don't think you are in a minority here :!:
I think most of us would love to have access to later censuses/censii -whatever - but most feel that in this area at least, a committment made to confidentiality can be kept without seriously inconveniencing us genealogists.
Like you, I'm getting on in years and have nothing to be concerned about from census returns but there are others who are still alive - like my mother and two of her siblings who have differing opinions about revealing the records of their childhood and youth.

By the way please refresh us on your lost, misplaced family since there have been quite a few new people to the board recently and it would bring it to their attention.
Your luck might be in :!: :!:

Thank you for your kind words Russell and I hope I was not out of line,
(one of the perks of being old, one gets to say what one really thinks)!

It is the 86th birthday of my husband today and great celebrations are in store at our house. I will as you suggest place another post regarding Donald and Ann Macrae later, although many of you will be sick of hearing of them.

Given the level of debate that this thread has led to, especially given the "disappearance" of "Jagilkat", then, subject to opinions of other members of the TSAG and Moderators, it could now perhaps be appropriate to lock this thread ??...........

That's not to say that it wouldn't be entirely appropriate to open a new thread on the validity or otherwise of current and future attempts to gain "early" access to the 1911 and later censuses.
