Census details

Post by Tracey » Sat Jul 05, 2008 7:54 pm

Does anyone know how i can find out the 1891 / 1901 census registration information for Marylebone Lane (London) ?
Ancestry doesnt allow an address search. I am not looking for anyone specifically so cant input a name its just that i told a friend i would look up who lived in her house at those times :-# :) .

Thanks

There is a rather long-winded way of doing it on Ancestry. If you go to SEARCH then UK censuses, year of census. When you have, say, the 1891 you scroll down to the bottom of the search boxes to the areas. Click on London, then St Marylebone. That brings up a number of areas. You then have to hazard a guess as to which one to try - eg All Souls has 17 districts in it. You have to then click on "view description of enumeration district", which will tell you which streets are covered. Then, I'm afraid you have to search page by page till you get to the right one!

I believe you may be able to search by address on Findmypast, but I'm not sure and you will obviously have to pay for the privilege.
Researching: KNOX of Renfrew. Also FORSYTH, MCFARLANE, MCINDOE, BENNIE, HUTCHISON, HENDERSON

Hi Tracey
I'm not sure if this will work - but if you can find the details on the 1881 census, they may be near enough the same for 1891...maybe?

You will need the 1881 census disks for this as you can search those by address or place name, which you cannot do at tbe 1881 on LDS site.

best wishes
Lesley

Thank you Leslie and Davran

I used George Lamerton for the 1901 as that is the side of the road that i need although there is a chunk of numbers i cant find 60 - 102 that dont follow on, and needless to say i found the 1891 using a name from the previous. Although the 1901 only has even numbers and the 1891 has odd - but i will take another look at that as i know they changed the house numbers by the time of the 1901.

I havnt had need to look for a road before and found it quite odd how the the streets continued.
Following Davrans way i found Duke Street ( i used to work there once upon a time) now when Duke st ends on the census it then continues with Great Titchfield Street :? . Anyone that knows London will know that this Duke Street (there are two, one in St James's) runs from the South of Oxford Street from Grosvenor Square up to the North side to Manchester Square, Gt Titchfield Street is way over the north side of Oxford Circus and a good 10 -15 min walk away.
Is this normal ?

Many thanks for your help

Hello Maggie

I am looking for the part with numbers roughly 60 to 102. I have the odd numbers between 47 and 59.

Thanks
