School boys uniform

Post by speleobat2 » Mon Jul 21, 2008 12:13 am

Hi everyone,

I just uploaded a picture of two young boys wearing what I'm guessing are school uniforms. Either that or they were dressing up for the camera!

Does anyone recognize the uniform? They would have been from Islington, Middlesex, England circa 1915.

Thanks,

Carol

Hi Carol,

Love the photo!

The only school I know of where the boys wear black top hats (with morning coat) is Eton College which is in Berkshire.

Hi Anne,

At least the boys look happy in that photo. Not sure how comfortable those outfits would have been!

I thought of Eton. Wonder if there is any way to search for Eton alumni--assuming he graduated! The boy on the left is Douglas Munro--possibly Malcolm Douglas Munro. He would have been my dad's cousin. I can't remember ever hearing anything about a family member attending Eton though!

Hi Carol,

Yes, they do look happy. If you Google Eton you will find lots about the school including the alumni.

Looking at this site, I'd have to say your boys attended Eton...

Why not contact the archivist and send them the photo and names, etc. You never know, they might be able to fill you in a bit! :)

Thanks Anne,

Sure looks like the same suit! I had googled Eton, but only looked at the site briefly. Contacting the archivist sounds like a good way to go. Maybe I can find out if it is possible to search for an alumnus name.

Readers of the Beano of a certain age will no doubt confirm
I'd like to be apathetic but I really can't be bothered.

Looking for blacksheep & not finding any with
Groats & Stevensons in Orkney, Hood's in Dundee/Angus, Mclaren's in Clackmannan and Jolly's in Kincardineshire. There may be more!

Absolutely!

It's a cracking photo though. :D Not many of the older photos have such an animated feel to them. Unusual to see a smile too!

Best wishes
Lesley

Lesley,

It is a good picture, isn't it! I've been scanning a whole bunch of photos into my computer this passed week and have spent some time looking at them as photos and not just to identify the people in them.

There are some very high quality photos in this lot. Must have been some very good photographers in the 1890 to 1920 period especially considering the equipment they had to work with. There are some of the very stiff formal shots, but particularily with the younger people, some of the portraits are teriffic. The subjects are relaxed and the final pictures are clear and crisp. Unfortuately, many of them are scuffed and foxing is always a problem, but we're very glad to have them anyway!
