Would someone with ancestry be able to help me please.
I am trying to find the death of anna belli b 1868 in edinburgh. She is on the 1891 census aged 20 living in paddington as a servant (nurse of sick)
cant find her in the 1901 census.
There is a family story that she went to russia but returned to the uk at the time of the revolution to live in london. she never married.
I know she died sometime during ww1 in london but not sure what her surname would be as her family still living in scotland changed their surname to baillie at the start of ww1 because of the italian link.
The problem is that there are many anna baillie's (and many varients) between 1914 -1918 who died in london.
any help much appreciated.
all the best

Hi Lesley,
Tried freebmd but it just takes me straight to ancestry. Am I doing something wrong?
I have found her on the 1901 census though, her surname was transcribed as Bell, when I looked at the original there it was Belli. So, I tried Bell for her dod but no luck. She is probably there staring at me but I can't find her.
Will keep looking.

Hello Helen,
Deaths on FreeBMD http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl still have some gaps around the WW1 period, so she may appear there under the Belli name later. FreeBMD are certainly rocketing along. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/progressD.shtml#1910
You could check the quarterly images for Belli deaths for a number of years during and either side of WW1. It’s not so bad once you get into the swing of it especially for an unusual name.

If she had a long illness before her death she may have ended up with a relative etc away from London and died there.
The Russian Revolution started in 1917 but there were many disturbances prior to that. Italy was on the same side as Great Britain during WW1 but would have got progressively worse press during the Mussolini Fascist period which started in the early 1920s and ended during WW2 when Italy was fighting on the other side.
Hope this helps,
Alan

Hello Alan,
Thanks for all the information and the links. I have tried every thing I can think of to find Anna's dod, no luck, I'm stumped. She is in the 1901 census as a nurse in the Evelina childrens hospital in Soutwark London (the same area where Stephano died) I think there may be a Belli link to London but I have yet to find it. The National Archives may have records of staff from the period that Anna worked there .I am hoping to find an address - but then again she may have lived in the nurses home (if they had them at that time).
The Mussolini point you made was helpful, so I guess the Belli's may have changed their name later that I originally thought.
many thanks
Helen

Good luck Helen,
There seems to be quite a lot of surviving material.

Hi Helen
If you go to free bmd
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
and select deaths, surname Belli, there is a reasonable list returned, many in London. Some may be familiar to you and may help. Not seeing your Anna though.
Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Alan and Lesley,
These Belli's are soooo elusive. No luck with the Evelina Hospital, apparently the staff records have not survived.
I have discovered though that Anna died during WW2 and not WW1 as I first thought. Still can't find her dod, not sure what her surname would be.
Oh well, I shall just keep trying. I have a couple of older relatives who may remember something.
all the best
