summers ballantyne
elizabeth ballentyne (various spellings) married a summers (various spelling) they were married in scotland and then lived in possibly somersetshire. Their son william or john william came to Tasmania free on the "Arab" in 1842. He possibly had brothers charles and james and at least one sister elizabeth. William was in his early 20's on arrival and I am his great granddaughter. I would love to find out more about this family especially william's fathers name. Can you help?

Katrina,
Can you give us some idea of where you got the information you do have?
was it his 'entry' papers to Aus. or on his marriage or death certificates?
For instance what makes you certain his parents were married in Scotland?
Did any of his family follow him to Australia or did they all stay in the UK?
Perhaps he appears on the 1841 census somewhere?
Though without more exact dates or locations it could be difficult
to pinpoint him as he may very well have been away from home or en route!

Hello Katrina,
I’ll just add a link to your previous post. Otherwise things may get confusing. There are a couple of points there as well that probably should be clarified if possible.

A bit more,
There’s a discussion on this 2001 forum about the 1842 voyage of the Barque “Arab” 291 tons.
http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/t ... 0992687598
Some more here from the same person, is she talking about the 1842 voyage? Master was William Westmoreland. Her ancestors from Somerset were on board – “first class farm labourers” under a bounty scheme.
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/rea ... 0992424918
And here’s more from the same person:
“Francis was a farm labourer who left his native Somerset with his wife Ann, and their six children in search of a better life, hoping for an opportunity to acquire some land of their own. They sailed on the “Arab” and landed in Launceston”
Near the bottom of this page under Culliford someone’s ancestor ”emigrated to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) in 1841 aboard the Barque "Arab" arriving in Launceston Mar 31st. 1842. Emigration Records show that they came from Dorsetshire.” That brings to mind the “Frome Farm” you mentioned earlier.

If your ancestor arrived under a bounty scheme where part of the cost was paid by the government there would have been records. I haven’t seen any Tasmania records and don’t know if they are the same but my ancestor’s 1842 bounty arrivals to NSW includes information such as native place, age, occupation, parents names etc. Have you seen the Tasmania bounty records? It looks like they’re on microfilm at Tasmania Archives, also at LDS Centres and maybe at some libraries.
