English Marriage Cert

Post by Jean Jeanie » Fri Nov 07, 2008 10:01 pm

I have been doing a bit of research for a friend.

Trouble is all the ancestors are from England!

One side has been relatively easy due to unusual names and the fact that they remained in the same place from one census to the next.

To confirm her grandmother's line I need a bit more detail.

Can anyone tell me what I can expect to find on a 1911 English marriage certificate?

Best wishes
Jean

Jean as far as i can see by the ones i have left to view on my pc there is no difference between an 1864 and a 1923 marriage certificate. They both have the bride and groom, age, marital status, occupation, address fathers name and occupation and signatures of witnesses. Dont have a 1911 one, i would presume they are the same but i could be wrong :)

This is always useful for English research.

Sometimes the exact age is not given and it just says 'full age' meaning over 21.

Hi Jean
According to several web sites, this is likely to be the content:

Where the ceremony happened
The name of the church or the registry office
The date of the wedding
The full names of the couple
Their ages at the time of the wedding
Their marital condition (e.g. spinster, bachelor, widow or widower)
Their occupations
Where they lived at the time of their marriage
The names and occupations of their respective fathers.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Tracey and Lesley

I'll see if she wants to part with some cash to get it.

However I don't think it will help me much. Really need the mother's name as well as the father's

Best wishes

When were they married in 1911? I think the mother's maiden name appears in the GRO index with the Sep quarter of that year.

Still thinking here..... :D.....of course if they beat the Sep quarter for the marriage....there is always the birth certs of the babies....mother's maiden name should appear in those GRO indexes after 1911 too....

Hiya Namesake!

Great to hear from you!

The date of marriage came from his war records. The date being 23 Feb 1911. Checked this out on Ancestry with both names and it ties up.

The children of the couple are no problem. The children being my friend's father and his siblings (1912-1920)

What I am trying to find out is the maiden name of the bride's mother in 1911.

It would appear that the mother's name would not be shown on her daughter's marriage cert.

Best wishes
Jean
