Post by liz hutchison » Wed Jan 14, 2009 12:35 pm

Hi I have been doing a lot of Research on my Langhorn side but have drawn a blank looking at the 1841 Census. In the Box that say Native to the Country they have ticked no, so my Questions is, back then was Scotland and England divided so if they are born in Scotland but are in the English Census if born in Scotland would they tick no.I know they originate from Scotland but dont know when. Langhorn family quiet big I was looking for a Thomas and a Robert. In the English Census Thomas Langhorn born 1816Marylebone and Robert born Cambridge 1813 and Family do not exist , Thomas and Robert are FRench Polishers their father is THomas as well but he is a Coach Builder born Lambeth around 1783 but cannot go back any further, anyone got any ideas.Liz Hutchison :P :? :? :?

Hi Liz
In the Box that say Native to the Country they have ticked no, so my Questions is, back then was Scotland and England divided so if they are born in Scotland but are in the English Census if born in Scotland would they tick no.
The box refers to in the same COUNTY , so if they indicated "no", then they were born in Scotland, just not in that county. If they were born in England, it would say so! The other way round would apply for England; if born in Scotland and appearign in an English census, it would say if they were born in Scotland. Also see:

Best wishes

So you are looking for a Thomas Langhorn and his 2 sons Thomas and Robert in the 1841 census?

I can't see any sign of them on FreeCen - but that is not complete.
The surname Langhorn could be written in several different ways though, so you may have to try several different versions to locate them [they weren't overly fussy about consistant spelling in the past].

Scotland'sPeople aren't throwing up anyone with that exact spelling either - but again different variations may prove more fruitful.

The IGI on familysearch.org gives thousands of Langhorns for England but only 25 for Scotland

There is a Thomas born 27 AUG 1825 Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland with parents :
Thomas LANGHORNE & ELIZABETH ROWAND SMITH who were Married 23 SEP 1822 Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

but that doesn't seem to fit with the information you have given.

This is probably Robert in 1851
1851 Middlesex St marylebone St mary HO107/1489 68/52
20a circuit street
Robt R C Langhorn Hd M 38 FrenchPolisher Cambridge
Ann do W (I think wife, no marital status given) 30 Middsx

I didn't instantly see him in 1841, but if you are searching 1841 do remember ages are supposedly rounded down to the nearest 5 years - so give a wide variation for year of birth. Birth location is not given - only whether inside or outside the county, (or the other countries of the UK) so I find it better to omit birth location from the search.

Do you think they are in Scotland in 1841, or is it simply that you cannot find them in the 1841 Census of England & Wales? Sometimes one has to be very creative with spelling & sometimes they just seem to NOT have been counted.
