Are women indexed on English death certificates by both maiden names and married names as in Scotland?

Hi marie
I don't think so..or at least in 1874 the answer is no. My 2xgrgrandmother is recorded simply as her married name on the certificate. The data it contains is:
When and Where Died
Name and Surname
Sex
Age
Occupation
Cause of death
Signature description and residence of informant
When Registered
Signature of Registrar
Under name and surname she is listed as Betsy Sturgeon. Under occupation she is listed as wife of Robert Sturgeon Farm Labourer. No other relationships can be ascertained from this document alone.
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Marie,
This is the normal format for an english death cert.
An English death certificate shows:
* Full name of the deceased
* Cause of death
* Place of death
* Date of death
* Age at death
* Occupation of the deceased (if male)
* Name and occupation of the husband (if female)
* Name, address and relationship to the deceased of the person who reported the death
* Marital status (Scotland only)
* Name of spouse (Scotland only)
* Gender (Scotland only)
* Fathers name and occupation (Scotland only)
* Mothers name and maiden name (Scotland only)
and below is from National Archives
Information in a Death Certificate
name of the deceased occupation, or the name and occupation of the husband if a married or widowed woman
date and place of death name, address and family relationship if any of the informant
given age date and place of birth, usual address and maiden name if a married or widowed woman (but only from 1 April 1969)

Even with maiden name added to certificates - it is still not in the index.
Prior to 1969, the English death index only contains Name, district and age at death (from 1866).
Searching for a death after 1969 is a little easier because the index includes date of birth, rather than age at death. (assuming the informant knew the correct date) Between 1969 and 1983, however, it is a manual search of images by quarter. From 1984 onwards the index is by month & fully indexed by name, month&year, birth date & district.
This seems to have the index detail - hopefully it is current
