Places and Registration Districts in England and Wales

Post by LesleyB » Sun Mar 08, 2009 9:54 pm

Just found this when searching for some folks on the other side of the border. I expect it is "old news" for many, but I found it really useful in working out the Registration Districts to look for possible births following on from finding places of birth mentioned in the census. I've added it to the links page for England.

INDEX OF PLACES IN ENGLAND AND WALES
"These pages are only intended to be used in conjunction with the list of Registration Districts in England and Wales 1837-1974 (www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg) For each place listed, this index shows the county and registration district in which it was situated between 1st July 1837 and 31st March 1974, at which latter date the districts
were considerably altered. Please note that this is not intended to be a comprehensive gazetteer of place-names, and that only Civil Parishes or Townships named in the General Register Office's published lists are included."

Hello Lesley,

That’s a great list. I downloaded it several years ago but had completely forgotten where it came from. I’ve used it many times, in fact only yesterday.

I usually save anything like this to my computer. Like all good stuff on the Internet it may not be there tomorrow or at least you may not be able to find it.

All the best,
Alan

Hi Alan
I usually save anything like this to my computer.
Yeah, me too...then I forget where I've filed it...! (and of course, can't remember what it was called either, so using search can be...well, ...interesting, unless I can remember when I saved it!)

Best wishes
Lesley

I've used this one often as well - when searching for place names in London- not all seem to be mentioned in the registration districts.

Thanks Trish,

I’ll save that one. I’ve had a few problems with localities in London.

All the best,
Alan
