Ezekiel Barber, Lancashire

I'm doing a bit of research for a pal's Mum who is turning 89 at the end of this month.

Her father was Ezekiel Barber, who was born in Lancashire abt 1870. Her mother, Alice Beaumont Webb, was not Ezekiel's first wife, he may have been married at least twice before, the first wife was Agnes Emily Knight born abt 1874 and appears to have died in 1911. My pal says that her mother remembers vaguely that another wife was called Florence and there were Uncles Percy amd Jonathan and and Aunt, Flo.

On the 1901 census Ancestry index I've found TWO Ezekiel Barber in Lancashire.

One born about 1870 and has a wife called Agnes (they married in 1895)

Fairly sure this is hers but the other Ezekiel Barber born abt 1876 DID marry a Florence Ridge in 1901(she died in 1901) around the same area, and either Rebecca Gowers or Mary Jane Hurst in 1904.

Found another Ezekiel baptised 1864 to a Jonathen and Sarah in the same area but no marriages or deaths for him that I can see.

Could SKS have a wee look on the 1871 census for Ezekiel Barber age one with Parents John and Jane (it's probably been mistranscribed as Ann). Would like to know the ages of the parents and where they where born plus details on any siblings (there seems to have bee two John Barbers with a wife Jane)

Also I'd be really grateful if someone could have a look at the 1901 census to see if there is a Jonathen, Percy and Flo in the house with Ezekiel and Agnes.

I find the 1871 is the worst transcript of all the census records - but this time I was lucky & Ezekiel seems to be correctly transcribed. I think this is the family you wanted

Thanks Trish, looks like the Jonathan and Sarah who had other Ezekiel abt 1848 (this Ezekiel wasn't baptised until 1864) are from the same family

I find Ezekiel aged 11 has been transcribed by all as Hezekial
Father John is a grocer and the extra children are Hannah 7 Mary 5 John 3 and Jane 1

Looking at the Ekekiek born c. 1876 in 1881, his parents are George and Elizabeth and of interest George is also born in Chowbent, so the two families sound related. Children of this family in 1881 are Joseph 12 Jane 10 Mary 9 Jonathan 6 Ezekiel 4 George 3 Elizabeth 1

I'll go back earlier to see if George and John are related

This has got me all confused. The family of George Barbour and Elizabeth Arstall look to be related too. There is Ezekiel, Hannah and an Alice. Think I'll be a wee while sorting this lot out.

I am having trouble finding the family before 1871 but it's relatively easy to check the 1911 via the free searches with a name like Ezekiel barber being fairly rare in Lancashire

Marriage to Alice Webb was in 1914. There doesn't appear to be another marriage between the marriage to Agnes and the marriage to Alice. Both marriages seem to have been in the Chorlton district.

If you do a free search on 1911 census the people living in the same household as an Ezekiel in Chorlton are given and include a percy aged 2 but no Flo or Jonathon. The other Ezekiel and his wife can be picked up in Haslingden - they only had one child in 1911

The children not on 1901 belonging to Ezekiel and Agnes include Ada 6 months, agnes 7, Doris 5 and Percy 2

I am realising why the early census records are a problem - manchester area in 1851 was never filmed - one of the family history groups did transcribe the records and I think they are now available on findmypast - used to be on familyhistoryonline which I think passed all records to fmp

meanwhile - here is George in 1861, with an Ezekiel (born c1848) but no John - he could well have left home by then - 1851 would be so handy to link the families together
