Post by maggie » Tue Jan 05, 2010 10:42 pm

Hello
i'm struggling to find Thomas kay in the 1851 census and thought it time to turn to my clever friends on TS for help
Thomas Kay was born around 1800 and married Lucy catterson in 1825 in the 1841 census HO107/1258/9 Hutton Lucy is recorded as being married and listed with her parents Thomas & Mary and her children
Mary Thomas Ann & John but husband Thomas is with his brother William and sister Jane HO107/1234/3 .Thomas is recorded as being age 40 and a grocer In the 1861 Lucy is on her own but recorded as being married, but in the 1871 Lucy is again recorded on her own but is a widow .
So i'm looking for a Thomas kay a grocer
any help will be much appreciated
kindest regards
maggie

Hi Maggie
Sorry if I'm being particularly thick, but what town and county is "HO107/1258/9 Hutton"? And HO107/1234/3? Is it somewhere in England - can you be a bit more specific as to where it is? (just guessing as the En. Dist. numbers do not look familiar to me...and as you have posted in the England forum area  )

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Maggie

May not be of much help but my interpretation of the 1841 would be that Jane is the mother of William and Thomas. There is a baptism on the IGI
Thomas Kay 10 Jan 1801 Osmotherley, Yorkshire England father John Kay mother Jane - which fits nicely with where they were living in 1841 - A parent search shows siblings with William baptised 1788.

I'll keep looking for the census - There are a few Yorkshire areas listed (although mainly Lancashire) where the records were water damaged and are not included in most renditions of the 1851 census. Unlikely but possible he is included in same.

But I haven't been able to find Thomas in the 1851 - interesting that his wife says she is a "retired grocer". It is very difficult to check deaths at those time because age is not on the index until the 1860s. If they were living apart from before 1841, Lucy may not have known when her husband died

My only thought would be to try and track some of Thomas's siblings to see if you can find Thomas nearby. The only vaguely likely record I found was a Thomas - ag lab from Yorkshire in southern England - the place of birth was not Osmotherley, but it did start with O and enumerators of the time often got the locations incorrect - sorry I couldn't find anything else - perhaps someone else will do better
