I don't have a clue about what is shown English marriage entries but David BRUCE and Margreat GATES were married on 18th February 1877 in Newcastle upon Tyne (info from IGI).

Re: David Bruce
Hello emmess,
just to complicate matters, a search on the Newcastle Register Office site at
http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/registrars. ... endocument
shows that Margaret Gates was also known as Margaret Robson - no mention of Scott.
The description of James as 'boarder' instead of 'son' in the 1871 census seems odd
FreeBMD has births of Margaret Scott in Brampton for the quarters Sep 1843 and Sep 1845, with the latter fitting in better with her age (particularly in the 1881 census). A birth certificate for Mary Ann or Elizabeth would give her maiden surname (if she told the truth).
Regards,
John

David Bruce Gateshead
Hello Ken,
Many thanks for your input in my continuing saga, unfortunately I don’t think this is the same Bruce family
David Bruce was born 28/2/1835 and baptised15/3/1835 at Inch Wigtownshire. He was the natural child of MICHAEL BRUCE and ELIZABETH SAVAGE - in total they had three boys but never married.
ROBERT b 1832 was with grandparents( John and Elizabeth Bruce) in Inch in1841 and was a pensioner (presumably –army) when he returned to live with his father and stepmother in Inch in1881, he never married -eventually taking responsibility for an extended family of stepmother and assorted step nephews and nieces until he died in 1898.
DAVID b 1835 was brought up by grandparents (John and Elizabeth Bruce). In 1851 age 15yrs he was still a scholar which seemed quite old considering other children of his age were usually working. I did hope he had managed to benefit from an extended education but he disappeared.
JOHN b 1837- neither he nor his mother Elizabeth were ever found again. I presume they both died.
I also presumed David had died as he didn't show up on any Scottish searches, until he turned up in the Gateshead 1881 census as a joiner which is the occupation of most of his step brothers. He is also on the 1871 census but don't know yet about 1861.
The 1877marriage to Margaret Gates /Robson (widow) dau of Thomas Robson gives David's father as Michael (husbandman) which fits as Michael was a farm worker in Inch for 37yrs. Robson surname remains a problem. Margaret‘s Scott's surname on James Wilson Bruce’s 1871 certificate seems nearly right( She is Gates formerly Scott when her daughter Elizabeth is born in 1867.)
Father Michael had another natural son with a different lady before marrying an Ayrshire blacksmith's daughter in 1841 and having a further 7children.-A total of 11 children.
Anyway thanks again for trying,
emmess
