some time in the next couple of weeks I hope to head south to search for possible family of my wife. her grandfather was john grant mcpherson from banffshire he married a lady fro scotland called mary mcnicol bruce 1868 she died in bolton le sands 1894 ,he later married a mary ann pritt (polly)1900. We know nothing about them except for childrens names is there someone perhaps could point me in the right direction ; cemetries or anything more direct .hopefully with thanks.

This could be them on the 1871. Age & names of the two eldest children appear to fit and two of the servants are named Brue which was his wife's maiden name:

However, from the IGI I see John and Mary married in 1868 at Brechin Angus. I took a look at their marriage certificate on Scotland's People:

Mary Nicol Bruce - Spinster - Age 25 - 34 Market Street, Brechin,

Looks like I was right with the 1871 Census

Hello Utrecht,

I’m not sure how far you’ve gone with this.

Using census info and just the index information at the FreeBMD site you can track the McPherson family fairly easily and probably over several generations. There seems to have been not much more than one McPherson family in the district of Lancaster. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

He seems to have had several occupations over the years including ironworks storekeeper, insurance agent and gardener.

The Lancaster Gazette etc, Saturday, May 03, 1884, has a death notice “Bolton-le-Sands—On the 29th ult., William Grant, son of Mr John McPherson, insurance agent, aged 13 years.”

This site has transcriptions of Parish registers and you’ll find details of baptisms, marriages and burials for the family. The family graves appear to be at Holy Trinity in Bolton-le Sands. http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Lancaster/stp ... -1900.html

I think this is the church and churchyard, the one with the square tower.

By the purest chance, in researching the family of Stockdale in Lancaster, I came upon your postings about Macphersons. Alfred Macpherson married Jane Stockdale at St paul's Scotforth on 23rd December 1897.

Can you tell me when Alfred died?

These coincidences are uncanny aren't they

ps I'm not related to Jane. I'm researching this family for a friend who lives in France.
