1841 / 51 census look up ? .....

Post by Tracey » Mon Sep 05, 2005 7:49 pm

Do any of you kind souls have access to the 1841 / 51 English  census for Cumberland ?
I am trying to find Stephen Hartley and his wife Jane. They may have daughters Ann b c1831 Hensingham and Jane b c1835 - 40 ish in Whitehaven. These are the only 2 siblings i am aware of and i dont know Stephen or Janes birth years or places. Sorry there isnt much to go on but i know what happened to Ann and Jane from 1861 but havent found the parents on any census so far.

Many thanks

Tracey

Hi Tracey

Sorry I don't have any access to those English census records....but from poking around in the IGI it looks like there may have been three separate Stephen/Jane Hartley parent combinations in that region.....but no apparent birth for the Jane you mention born Whitehaven unless the first Jane b. 1835 Hensingham died and the family had relocated to Whitehaven and had another Jane......anyhow....I'm guessing these are the offspring of the family you seek:

WILLIAM HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 21 APR 1829 Hensingham, Cumberland, England

ANNE HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 03 APR 1831 Hensingham, Cumberland, England

JANE HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 02 AUG 1835 Hensingham, Cumberland, England

RICHARD HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 08 SEP 1833 Hensingham, Cumberland, England

Note that baby William died 5 days after christening but that does leave a Richard to try and track down!

However there is also this clump to a Stephen & Jane (Which seem too recent to be part of the same family above?)...........

MARY JANE HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 24 FEB 1856 Whicham, Cumberland, England

PHILIP HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 22 SEP 1849 Whicham, Cumberland, England

JOHN HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 16 MAR 1851 Whicham, Cumberland, England

MARGARET HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 21 DEC 1847 Whicham, Cumberland, England

WILLIAM HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 14 JAN 1855 Whicham, Cumberland, England

STEPHEN ... HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 29 FEB 1852 Whicham, Cumberland, England

and then these to a Stephen Newby Hartley & Jane:

ELIZABETH ANN HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 25 NOV 1860 Millom, Cumberland, England

JAMES SEPTIMUS HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 17 JAN 1863 Millom, Cumberland, England

MILES HARTLEY - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 01 JAN 1859 Millom, Cumberland, England

Do you have any idea when Stephen and Jane died?

Best wishes
Jean

Hello again Jean

The first bunch you put on i had found and they seem to be the closest by far going by Ann and Janes birth dates. The next lot are definitly not them. I have no idea when Jane or Stephen died. The closest i have to their marriage is on familysearch the submitter has spelt her (Jane) name wrong he has it at Leager not Ledger. Their daughter Jane was my gt gt grandmother who married William Donaldson in 1870 in Elgin. I have all info for her and her sister Annie who married Isaac Linton in Cumberland. I am finding it difficult looking for other siblings which is why i asked about the census look up but i dont think those years are available yet going by my searches. I have searched scotlandspeople for Stephen and Jane- the parents- and they are not there, and i have no idea what my Jane was doing in Elgin unless as William who was a journalist he dragged her back there from England to marry him then to bring her back to England and dying on her and she fled back to Elgin to hide the shame !

Thanks for your help

Tracey

Ok a cheeky update just incase anyone does have Ancestry as the 1851 census has been fully restored but my account with them hasnt :D

1851 i doubt now you will find Stephen Hartley. On one of his daughters marriage cert 1852 it doesnt say deceased but i have found Cumberland marriage transcript that says he was. So if Stephen isnt head then his wife Jane Hartley possibly is although i dont know how old she was. I know what the IGI says but i only know of two children 100 %. Once i find this census or earlier i can start to work on what the IGI has. They may be living in Church Street Whitehaven Cumberland.

I think maybe i should re write this
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

Three Stephen Hartleys in Cumberland in 1851:

Cumberland > Egremont > District 2b

Stephen Hartley 50 Joiner born Egremont
Mary wife 42 born Moresby
Eleanor 13 dau born Whitehaven
Stephen 11 scholar Whitehaven
John 3 son Egremont

Cumberland > Haile > District 3

Stephen Hartley 49 farmer of 350 acres employing 8 men born Gosford
Hannah 51 Wife born Gosford
Issac 17 son Gosford
Henry 11 son Gosford

However there is a Lancashire born Stephen who was married to a Cumberland born Jane:

Cumberland > Whicham > District 4

Stephen Hartley 31 farmer 70 acres born Ulverston
Jane 31 wife born Milton
Margaret 3 born Whitehaven
Phillip 1 Whitehaven
John 6 months Whitehaven

There is a 16 year old Jane Hartley in Whitehaven she was a servant but no Janes of mothers ages.

Ann Hartley was visiting Issac Linton in Preston Quarter, Whitehaven in 1851.

At the house were:

John Linton 60 farmer of 107 acres born Whitehaven
Elizabeth 60 wife Haile
Issac 21 son watchmaker Hensingham
Ann 18 dau Hensingham
Ann Hartley 20 visitor Hensingham
Mary Sharp 26 servant Whitehaven
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hello Andy

Just saw the time of your posting. When i woke up i saw i had an email with a response to this and when i pasted (?) the link it said there was an error and your message wasnt there :? ......never mind

OK..............This one
Ann Hartley was visiting Issac Linton in Preston Quarter, Whitehaven in 1851.
At the house were:
John Linton 60 farmer of 107 acres born Whitehaven
Elizabeth 60 wife Haile
Issac 21 son watchmaker Hensingham
Ann 18 dau Hensingham
Ann Hartley 20 visitor Hensingham
Mary Sharp 26 servant Whitehaven
.................is my gt gt grandmothers sister who married Isaac Linton so this one answered. Are they living at Chapel Street, does it say ?
On the marriage cert 1852 it says his father John is Seargent of Cumberland Malitia. Anns father a Joiner.
The Eleanor intrigues me as i have found a Linton cousin visiting her in 1871 (and it looks like she maried the man she was working for), she isnt on the IGI as being born to Stephen and Jane but i have included her as a wild card :!: on my list. I havent got that marriage cert as i am limiting myself now and hoping someone will check that out for me as to who her parents were!
The 16 year old Jane is possibly my gt gt grandmother. As for the others im still none the wiser ! :? but am looking at the Stephen and Mary and wondering if Mary is Jane :?: re two Jane,s in the house at one point :?
This is going to bug me for the rest of the day now :D

Many many thanks for your response.
