Prisoners of War

Post by carolineasb » Fri Apr 12, 2013 3:19 pm

Not quite sure which bit of the Forum this question should go in so if I'm wrong, I apologise.

I am wondering if anyone knows if there are any viewable lists of foreign Prisoners of War from WW2 in the UK (rather than our POWs abroad)? In particular, those who would have come from what became East Germany and countries further East but fought for the German Forces. Also, looking to find if there are lists kept of those who stayed on in Central to Southern England at the very least to the mid 1950s (or are these, if kept, likely to be closed documents?).

Many thanks for any assistance.

Caroline

Thanks, Lesley.

I'll have a look at that and pass the info on to the person who is looking for the info.

Hello Caroline,

I don’t know whether this is relevant but Parliamentary Papers has yearly lists of naturalisations. I’m not sure if all years are covered but they are there for the 1950s and as far back as the 1850s. It’s just an index with original and adopted names, native place, current place of residence etc. I think I’ve seen them elsewhere, maybe in the London Gazette.
