William Kirkland MD

Post by frances » Thu Nov 20, 2014 4:03 pm

I have recently been doing some research on The Kirkland Family of Gogar, some of whom were surgeon apothecaries in the 18th Century.

I have managed to find out quite a bit about James & Robert Kirkland, but have not managed so well with William Kirkland.

I believe that he graduated MD in 1772 having studied at The University of Edinburgh and where he wrote his thesis "De Petussi" of Whopping Cough". After graduation he move down to Chelmsford where he lived and worked and I believed married.

It is his life in Chelmsford that I am interesting in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Frances,

www.FamilySearch.org has his marriage 15 April 1779 in Fareham Hants to Eleanor Wilkinson.
There also seem to be children found here too.

Best wishes,
Meg

At www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk
there seem to be some references to Dr William Kirkland in Chelmsford Chronicle.
They might be worth following up.

Thank you all for replies and suggestions. I have looked at some of these articles before which all adds to the family story.

What I am really trying to confirm is who William's father was. !!

Cheers and thanks

Frances :)

Frances,

Perhaps this will be more useful - you can download William's will at The National Archives for £3.30.
His widow and the daughters mentioned by Alan also have wills there.

Best wishes,
Meg
