Any advice?

Hoping someone can give some advice here. My grandmother's brother was killed in France in WW1 and I have loads of paperwork on this via Ancestry. Amongst it was a document giving names of blood relatives of the soldier. One was named as an uncle, Patrick Scanlan, aged 61, living in Southampton. This was my great granddad's brother. Great grandparents were born in Ireland and came to Scotland, and got married there. Patrick would also have been born in Ireland, but may have moved to England rather than Scotland, or may have moved to England from Scotland. From information so far, he and my great granddad were born just a year apart, in 1857 and 1858. I have searched Ancestry, but can find nothing on Patrick, a birth, marriage, death. Can anyone advise if there is a way to search English records online, as we can in Scotland's People? I am thinking he most probably married (if he was married) and died in England. I am hoping to get some clues from certificates about his life, work, family etc in England. Advice appreciated :-)

Just as an outside chance, have you looked at the census records? I've discovered a brother in law or 2 living with my newly wed grandparents.
Any idea when your gfather arrived in Scotland? And have you looked at tjier marriage to see if bro. Patrick was a witness then.
I did look at findmypast, there is death of a patrick scanlon, born 1860, dying in Southampton in 1933, I haven't got a fmp membership so can't see any more details.

Thanks for that reply. Yes, I had searched census records in Ancestry. There were references to a Patrick Scanlon, a police officer, living around London. But it was a very common name, so without detailed certificates, I can't link it accurately to him. I have full membership of Ancestry, but didn't join Find my Past as wasn't sure I would get anything g different in there that I couldn't get in Ancestry. Happy to join if anyone thinks there are more detailed records there?

There are no sites like SP for English records unfortunately. You have to apply for certificates at £9.25 each so it's expensive!
Your best bet is the 1911 census or (if he is still alive by then!) the 1939 Register which is available (expensively!) at FMP.
There is also the will site (Find a Will) if you know when he died which is free to search and can give valuable details without cost.
Have you checked the Irish 1911 census?
Where was he born in Ireland? And do you have any idea of his occupation?

Best wishes,
Meg

There's a Patrick Scanlon age 72 buried on 1 July 1934 at Featherstone, Yorks.

In 1911 there are 2 Patrick Scanlons one in London, born Kerry and one in Dewsbury, born Limerick.

There are 2 Patrick Scanlans in London but both born London.
One in Halifax, born Sligo and another in Bucklow, Cheshire born Roscommon.

Thanks everyone for replies. I am assuming he was born in same part of Ireland as his brother, my great grandad. That was Sligo. I did see a few Patrick Scanlans living in London by looking at census results. One was a policeman. I know that my grandmother's cousin, Patrick's nephew, was a police officer in Glasgow, so guess it's possible Patrick may have been a police officer in London and moved to Southampton later. I was able to get police officer records from Glasgow police myseum archives. Maybe the Met has similar records and I can make some enquiries through them about the policeman and try to establish if it was him. I can give them the names of his parents and siblings and an approximate year of birth, so maybe worth a try.
